UnderH2O:

I'm doing the same documents as monkey stated for a friend who's visiting in October from Australia. It's exactly as the consulate in Sydney have demanded of him.

Admittedly, it took THREE visits before the consulate folks gave him a definitive list of their requirements, but as it stands, that's what they're demanding of visitors who are staying with friends rather than in hotels (with evidence of said bookings).

Therefore, it appears that you may have it right as far as applicants in the U.S. goes, but not as regards world-wide tourist visa apps.

Of course, all these folks COULD get turned around on arrival (we are talking the Chinese Govt. here), but it seems unlikely if they've issued the visa.

P.S. Don't start the tedious insult thing with me - I'm just reporting the facts.

Make sure friends have your address written down somewhere and maybe even a copy of the invitation letter. Saw a guy getting grilled coming through customs because he did not know the address of his friend.....Just kept saying he was staying with a friend but could not prove it......

One more question about the tourist visa. I lived in Shanghai for one year until last July and now back in Europe.

I am planning to go back to Shanghai on a tourist visa but I have no job in my home country.
The application for a tourist visa requires my current occupation such as employer name and address.

What should I fill in as I have no job currently?

Not sure, but for now I'd put something ... anything ... other than unemployed. Put medically retired or something.

Its one thing to share our own experiences, but in this day and ae, by no means should anyone take it as fact as facts keep changing these days in regards to Visas for China. Good luck.

Ya, I'll dedicate a full day to deal with this in Ottawa. So if there are any complications when I get to the embassy, I'll have time to get the missing documents (by the use of the ever-so-godlike internet)

However, once i have my visa in the passport, I wish to know if there would be MORE complications awaiting me at the border.

Let's say the embassy issues me a visa without "strong" proof of accomodations or return tickets. IN MOST COMMON SITUATION, would that mean that I'll pass the customs at the airport with the same "not strong" documents?

THANKS :D

As for the dicussion over the invitation letter thing, forget about it. I was only MENTIONING that I saw that alternative to a hotel booking, but that I wasnt related to anybody family wise. I was just hoping that a friend who has a residency card (shanghainese by birth, etc etc) would be good enough as proof of accomodation in the "hotel" category.

I've always written my PREVIOUS occupation for any forms with that question.

Don't worry much about immigration upon arrival. They usually do not turn people away who arrive on a valid visa.

Can A friend, full years X (student) visa, own flat with registration residence thing invite me?

Probably not....the specific requirement is that the invitation letter can only be generated by someone with a Residents Visa...which is invariably tied to a Work Permit.

Students do not qualify...

How did he buy a flat on an 'X"?

Actually, students on X visas generally have residence permits.
