China Telecom or China Unicom. Go to one of their offices. A chinese speaker would be helpful.

Ask your landlord to see it up for you, that is what I did.

Just have some one call China Telecom for you, try it yourself, they might have English speaking operators now. They'll send someone over to your apartment and he will plug in an ADSL modem, uses the phone line, and then he will install the login s/w on your PC. Takes 15 to 30 minutes.

You can phone China telecom and they'll have an English option. #5 I think.

Since you're a foreigner, you'll have to go into the office in person with your passport and 600rmb CASH as a deposit. You'll have to sign a contract. (Mine was 3 years.)

Internet in China is really slow. The fastest I could get was 3m. In Canada I had 15m. I also get IPTV and a telephone included in the package. China telecom will only supply 1 or 2m if you don't want a phone.

It took me about 3 phone calls and an hour or so at the office.

You do it wrong.

Made a test to San Diego, because some people think you can get 25Mbps only to Chinese hosts.

kala, you signed a 3 year contract??? i thought you only needed 1 year? OP if you get your landlord to arrange it, the deposit wont be required. If you live in a modern apartment you may be able to get China Unicoms 4MB high speed service which only costs 800 RMB for the whole year. I dont beleive CT offers this yet and is more expensive (about 150 RMB a month for 2 MB)

China Unicom has very limited coverage for high speed internet. You got lucky!

Yeah, 3 years. Can't cancel or change it for 1 year. So kinda like a 1 year contract with 3 years guaranteed service/fees. CT has 4m, but in my building they couldn't guarantee the speed. They sold me 3m, but I'm connected at 4m! Usually download at about 3.8m on torrent. But I find that to be too bloody slow. I would like to have 10 - 30m!

Your landlord can set it up for you, just call your agent. We pay 150RMB per month btw.. I think that's fairly standard?

I've never paid for internet here. From my desk by my bedroom window I can have my pick from a number of unlocked wireless connections. The same was true in my previous apartment. I can't be the only one. Worth trying, anyway.

China Telecom does a 4M connection with iptv and free phone calls. I hope the qualty improves in Expo. Speed can change from 3.5M to 0.5M from day to day at the moment.

I use China Telecom; I was paying 150rmb for 2M. I just upgraded this past week to 4M and pay 200rmb per month.

At first one guy tried to tell me I had to get a phone line installed and pay 298rmb per month. But talking to a second person they told me this was not necessary, so no one needed to come over, they simply adjusted the speed. I guess it depends who you talk to over at China Telecom.

I pay month to month with a 3 year contract that can be can canceled or changed after 1 year. I've had no problems with speeds going up or down. My connection is very stable. I pay for 3, but have 4m.

At my office, we have 1m from CT. On the weekend, it almost comes to a halt sometimes. Getting like 8 - 10k instead of 1m! It also gets knocked out completely every couple of weeks! So I think it really depends on where you are and how many other people are on that line.

For 3m, phone, and IPTV, I pay around 200 per month.

definitely dont need a phone line for broadband here. Speed depends on where you are. If you live in a popular compound like 8 Park, then you're sharing with a lot of other people. Mine was really slow there. Then I moved into an old lane house in a very local area where few had internet and it was blindingly fast. Recently moved to a new compound with China Unicom's 4MB service and it's always 4MB download. Twice the speed of CT but half the price. Only new compounds with special kind of wiring can use this though.

Iptv is Internet Protocol Television. Basically you get your tv over the internet, but you need a converter box to view it. CT offers it for free with 3m and 4m connections. You get about 200 channels and a bunch of specialty on demand sports and movie channels. Any of the normal channels can be paused and rewound, like having pvr, and all channels allow you to view any program already aired on demand. It's better than normal tv.

My speed test results to Canadian server on Monday at noon:

Download: 3046Kbs
Upload: 507.4Kbs

Not bad. I'm getting what I pay for.
