Postby RussianBear » Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:01 am

At this days i bought small gift in USA on-line store and they shipped by USPS First Class MAIL. I has check at USPS.com and there have not any detailed info about transit time except - "varied".
When i may expect delivering ?

Thank you for any information !

In my experience it usually takes about 2 weeks. If it is sent registered mail, then it usually takes a few days longer -- up to a week longer.

I think a lot depends on where you live, too. In Beijing I seem to get things delivered much faster than when I lived in Guangzhou and still quite a bit better than when I was in Shanghai.

Based on my experience, I bought stuff quite a bit from ebay. It is really "varied". depends where from the US its from as well. sometimes Its here only a week, but sometimes 2 weeks. The funny thing is, I know for fact, between first class and priority mail is not much different.

Austingirl , acually here have some difference.. First Class is cheap for half from Priority cost.

It give me some ideas about USA sellers when i pay for Priority and they ship by First Class..:

Russianbear, Sorry I didn't make it clear. I was talking about the shipping time. Based on my experience, first class and priority not really have much different. I've tried myself send some stuff from the US to here both ways... they came about the same time.

During this holiday USA USPS working as worse as they only can. If usually delivery from China to USA takes 7-12 days, right now it 20-25 days. I'm wondering if they fired a half of staff.

I guess, China customs have not reasons hold parcels that GOING OUT of country.
But, anyway, all is possible.

Russian Bear - During the holidays many things just slow down in all sectors in USA, I have noticed this even when mailing a domestic US package first class mail when living in US. Especially this year, less people are travelling so more packages are most likely being sent over the holidays which is causing these mass delays. And if you know the saying "going postal", you should just try to be patient. MED

Depends on what your selling if you look at it that way...all I am saying is 12/22 - 1/3 is shut down time in USA, its called the Christmas holiday and things are just slow. And I agree, the USPS has too few employees that handle an overload of letters, packages, etc during this period and just take their time. If time is of the essence, ups or fed ex is the way to go.

Did you pay for insurance? One of the benefits of priority mail is that you can track a package. For a camera - even if it's a used one, I would expect it to get held up. Last Christmas, I received a calendar that was shipped in an Apple box... I had to trek to my local PO, let them inspect it, and only then could I take it home.

This year, I was in the US, and on 12/23, a Budget Rental truck pulled up at my house. Out popped a Fedex guy delivering packages. Everybody is maxxed out during the Christmas season -- it's hard to cost effectively manage such a massive spike in volume.

I bought 4 items on eBay USA before Chinese New Year too.. to date they haven't arrived and I expect it'll take at least another week.

A shame as I come from Australia and mail from the USA only used to take a week or less!

This is coming from Delaware, USA to Shanghai, CHINA.

Coast to coast babbbbby.

depends on time of year both in US and China. Normally can figure about 2 weeks but from time to time you will wait up to about 7 weeks.

Am shipping a small electronic item from Fremont CA to Shanghai - Harmony One universal remote.

As Fedex and UPS are crazy expensive - i am also looking at USPS any tips,

can i insure the parcel?
Will it get stopped at customs, will i have to pay taxes?
Should i declare 180 USD or just put 50 USD on it and it won't get stopped?
I'd like it to get delivered to my front door and have someone sign for it?

I'm do not sure about chinese duties or limitations. Shipper just marked my parcel as "gift" and placed value $5. I received it without any problems. I signed for that at my front doors.

what happens when things get held up at customs? do they actually open the packages? are people allowed to ship non-perishable food (ie. jarred/canned goods, baked goods)?

my friends are organizing a big a package for me of random things. usps is the only affordable option so however long it takes is fine. just wondering what actually happens at the customs.

Have them mark it as a gift, and detail some of the contents -- not any new clothes or electronics.

If it does get stopped, you'll get a notice to go to your local PO, and they'll have you open it up and take a look.
