How much is a 32 GB memory stick? (bought on the street)

Postby Guru Pitka » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:40 am

Some woman at People's Square quoted me 180 RMB. I told her to give me her lowest price, which was 160. Then I walked away and she chased after me and said she'd give it to me for just over 100. I didn't buy it but was wondering what a fair price would be? Are those street bought sticks (Kingston, in this case) decent quality?

Never tried them before, but beware for fakes ;-) They will even show fake data on the stick, so you will perceive it to be 32GB.

Not only that. I've heard they are packed with malware.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

They can even show you on a nearby computer that it is 32G but often these things are unusable.

Buy a real one.

Probably about 4Gb (if you're lucky). Mind you, you get all the trojans thrown in for free.

lol, I can see why they would say 32 and sell you 4, but wtf is with the trojans? Why would they waste their time?

Obviously a fake one, it is even cheaper than the chipset cost at Taiwanese/Korean factory.

USB sticks you buy on the street are 99% fakes, as my Chinese friends all told me.

They can be cheap, but quality is without any guarantee, and noti nteresting if you want to store valuable data that you'd like to keep long term.

If you want real brands, with guarantee, Mediamarkt would be my choice too.

You mean, why would they waste their time deleting them?

These memory cards have to be formatted. That's when the malware (which is presumably designed to surreptitiously transfer itself from the computer doing the formatting) gets loaded. Do you really think they are going to waste a few kuai on virus detection software when they are only making a tiny margin anyway?

Another likelihood is that someone actually pays them to load the malware on. Especially if it's of the key-logging variety, which can be very profitable for someone somewhere.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

Hmm, website's not loading. It's not one of those haggling markets, is it? I hate performing the old 'I'm walking away until you agree to my price' song and dance. So uncouth.

If you are coming via the Nanbei Elevated Road, turn off at the Middle Huai Hai Rd and head westwards; it will be on your left hand side. You can find the car parking space at Jin Jiang International Shopping Center's ground level and basement (with space for 130 cars), CNY 10/hour (free for parking less than 10 minutes).
You can find the free bicycle parking space next to the entrance of Shanghai First Department Store.

No, no. A proper shop. Started in Germany in 1979. Just recently opened outlets in China.

^Yeah, I have been slowly shifting to consuming from only foreign-run places. Never thought I would be that guy, but at the end of the day if you want something done right, with less headache and with some level of accountability you can not participate in this local system.

I bought one from a shop vendor in Nanjing East road. Close to the Bund go down some stairs and there's a ton of shops.

Never worked. Waste of money. When I went back the shop was selling different merchandise. DON'T BUY ONE FROM THE STREET and expect it to work.

If you need a usb, I bout an 8gb at Metro Supermarket for 85 rmb just a few days ago. A sandisk Cruizer,

Cheap memory, regardless of being a photo memorycard or a USB key WILL corrupt your data. Even the premium manufacturers have a relatively high failure rate, but they get destroyed (or sold on the street more likely).
Buy a good one from a premium manufacturer. Memory speed is just as important as capacity, especially for cameras.

Got over to Media Markt today. Great place! Found an 8 GB USB for 77 RMB, which isn't too bad. Saw a few wireless mice for around 50 RMB, which seemed like a pretty good deal, too. They've also got great deals on notebook carrying bags.

Anyone know how their Apple prices compare to BestBuy? Could they possibly be lower than the Apple Store? It looked like they had some great deals on MacAirs (9-11K depending on size). Might pick myself up an iMac next time (about 10K, which I'm pretty sure is better than what BestBuy was selling them at when I was there last month).

Thanks for the suggestion! For anyone else who's interested in going, it's in the same building as Windows Scoreboard (aka 'Windows One') on Huaihai.

I can't think of any other place better than MM. They are Europe's number 1 store to go to for electronics.

Because they are so big they can just buy their stuff in bulk of a couple million pieces at the factory, causing them to be able to sell it for the cheapest price.

There is a massive difference in the speed of USB sticks / pen drives e.t.c and that is what decides the price. I have had cheap ones that are so slow it would literally take days to actually put 32GB onto it. A fast known brand such as Kingston or Corsair will cost you around 300yuan but be careful I have seen many sticks that say they have anywhere between 100GB to 500GB and its just fake.

Best bet is to take a laptop with some big DVD rip files on them and test the stick. Copy over a few 2GB files and see if you are happy with the speed.
Time is Natures way of ensuring everything does not happen at once.

The one I bought is a Transcend and it seems pretty decent. I copied 8 GB worth of data yesterday and it took about 5 minutes.
