Just read a depressing story about reading in the UK and got me curious...

Yep.. between bitty bites of info on the internet, incredible glut of media, movies, music.. people are having their imagination fed to them rather than doing it the "hard" way.. reading and having the words paint a picture. Seems to me we are missing something.

I read about 2 to 5 books a month depending on what other things I have on and how thick the books are. I wish I could get more friends to participate in a book sharing club. So far, there are two members :(.

Voracious reader. Can't bear to be without a book, except on a plane... for some reason, reading on a plane is tedious to me. Reading while waiting for a plane is fine as is reading while awaiting take-off, but after that, simply cannot read.

If counting audiobooks I'd say something like 10 a month, of not, maybe 3?

The amount of time you spend doing meaningless shite that you can use to "read" an audiobook is amazing.

Paper books, thanks to pdf-ization, also increased the output as you can carry a bunch of books and read virtually everywhere.

I think the amount I get to read here is probably one of the top 5 things of living in Shanghai, specially being a flat city where you can walk everywhere listening to a book.

Good thread idea actually.

Never "listened" to an audiobook... much prefer the good old fashioned paper version... Borrow from library or friend or if it is a book that I want to keep forever, then I buy it (thank goodness for 40% off discount coupons from Borders :D)!

Speaking of planes, I wish I could read or fall asleep on planes. However, whenever I am on a plane, I have a massive headache half of the time and the half of the time would be spent vomitting...

For those people who messaged me about a book club, I do have one, but in Melbourne, Australia and not in Shanghai. Sorry that my message was misleading.

If anyone know of a book / book swap club in Shanghai, please post the details here.

Enjoy reading very much...anything that is well-written. Thank goodness we have Chaterhouse Books and Garden Books in Shanghai now. Amazon delivers fairly promptly, too.
Also have a collection of audio-books back home. Great for when you're doing menial tasks around the house & some are simply beautiful to listen to...such as Richard Burton reading Dylan Thomas.
Take a book with me each day to read while having a coffee or lunch break, on the occasions I take such breaks. Interestingly, have never seen a local staff member reading a book during a break.

By the way, the SEA (Shanghai Expatriate Association) has a book club which meets once a month.

What is a good source for decent, free audio books? Hoping my knee will be back to normal again soon so I can return to jogging. Thanks in advance.

I use my speed reading way to read books in home, I can read some book within 2 or 3 days( also take some rests when I read books) so 3 or 5 books per month to read it in here is very simple to me to enjoy it~~~~~~
