how to connect netbook to TV

Postby Business_Catte » Sat Dec 31, 2011 9:27 am

i own a relatively new HP netbook and a Samsung 42" TV
The TV has many of the most common inputs.
I haven't checked the exact outputs on the netbook but like most netbooks its limited. it's not a 'media' netbook or special in any way. pretty sure it has a standard monitor connection output though.

So how do i connect it so that the tiny netbook screen is displayed on my huge TV?
Is it enough to just buy a cable that matches the netbook's monitor out with any of the TV's inputs?
Do i need special software or will it recognize the connection automatically?

I pray to the advanced tech nerd-gods of this forum to explain a simple concept to a complete idiot like myself

Hey Noob.
Just buy a standard VGA monitor cable. No software required. Go to inputs on your TV menu and choose the VGA as the input. On your netbook, go to control panel, display settings, and et the TV as your primary display. Or try Fn F4 or F5.

As for sound, it depends on your TV. For one of mine I use a RCA to sony headphone jack splitter. For the other one, I use a double male headphone extension cable.

Also, set your netbook's display (in control panel) to 1080 x 1920 or the highest possible setting to get the best picture on your TV.

Guys, do you know if it is possible to do it with a MacBook Air? Is there any special cable? Wanted Apple TV to do it, but it is not available anymore

^^ Scotch, yeah... go get Mini-DVI to DVI adapter first (Apple store), then DVI to HDMI adapter (e.g. Taobao ), then HDMI cable to your TV if there's a HDMI connection. The pic quality is just incomparable to VGA.

Yes scotch there is, you can go to one of the electronics malls around town and pick up a unofficial adapter. I got one for 100rmb a while back, but I have a feeling I paid too much.

And a quick taobao later... http://s.taobao.com/search?q=apple+hdmi ... 0#J_Filter confirms that I did.
