How to file without a W2 while working overseas?

Postby nativeshanghai » Sat May 29, 2010 11:33 am

Hello,

I am working overseas in Shanghai and I am sure that my employer won't issue me a W2 since it is not a US entity. (on a cash basis)

How do I file my 1040 without a W2?
Can I use any other documents as substitutes for W2?
Can I file 1040 without a W2?

Thanks!!

You've been asking Tax questions since beginning of Feb.
Don't you think it's time you got yourself hooked up with a professional who can take care of all of that for you?

If you are getting paid in Cash here, I would bet your Chinese employer is not claiming anything here, unless you are putting that cash in a US Bank, there is no record of it, Victor is right you need to talk to a Tax person, but I would say you have kinda a catch22 here. You can indeed file a 1040, with a schedule "C" attached. Maybe set as a consultant with your US address?

Or purchase a copy of TurboTax, follow the instructions on how to create your own W2 for a non-US company, finish your tax return, and mail it in.

At least whenever I tried to fill out my own W2 the program told me it has to be mailed instead of filing electronically.

And like victorinchina said, if you're not satisfied with any responses, consult a tax accountant.

You need a tax person to help you. Not having a W2 is the least of your problems. How are you managing social security, medicare, state taxes, etc.?

You ain't annoying me.. But if I had the understanding of tax you seem to have, I would seek prof help... Hence my suggestion.

Anyway, I'll leave my comments to myself  Only two persons tax I care about anyway..
