Interesting How China likes Hip-Hop

Postby cassell » Tue Aug 29, 2006 9:08 pm

Believe me or not. Five years ago, chinese people don't know how to enjoy hip-hop. When I was playing some rap music, they were like "you call this music???" Cause most chinese people only like slow soppy love songs. Fast dance club music is not appealing to them. But at that time, they knew something about rock'n'roll. They think it is coolest music but they still have trouble appreciating it. Yes everyone knows the song "My heart will go on". If you asked them what Hip-Hop is like, they would think it was something like Micheal Jackson stuff. But all of sudden, there is Hip-Hop party everywhere in Shanghai. But I really doubt they know how to enjoy it. Most people probably just think it is cool and fashionable to go to the party.

Also in their way of accepting Hip-Hop, they had a habit of accepting a white image first. Most chinese people probably only know one rapper, Eminem, even though there are plenty of black rappers better than him. Black Eyed Peas is so popular in China now that they just had a concert in Shanghai. This is because they have a pretty white girl in it. If you ask any Chinese if they know about Outkast, most of them would say no.

i dont think they grasp the concept of "hip-hop". Just like everything else, if it's perceived as being "cool", they'll accept it. I always laugh when I see the chinese people wearing sideways caps, jeans two sizes too big, and dreads. I wonder how long before they start sporting gold grills.

I think I do, but I think it's too bad some people take things a bit too seriously! I mean you're obviously just swinging off Jay Chow's n**s, but really, lighten up.

It is crazy. Cause I asked my black friend from New York. He doesn't even know what you are talking about. You must be very black...

haha, Chinese are not the only one to be innocent about the core concept of Hip-Hop. once interviewed an australian white father, he says HipHop culture is a total trash.

the cultures of the world are diversified, sometimes diversified enough to look odd and strange even one rooted from another could turn into totally different ones. all we need is to be tolerant.

Cassell, contrary to popular belief all black people don't listen to HipHop or talk the way pixelstrange described above so it's not all that odd that your 'black friend from New York' didn't comprehend those statements. And to answer your earlier question about gold grills, they are fake gold teeth that a lot of rappers in the U.S. wear in their mouth (suppose to be some kind of 'status' thing). They even expanded to platinum 'grills' and even some with diamonds in them. If you'd like to see what one looks like, check out the link below. It's to this white guy who raps site (he's actually pretty popular in the U.S. and NO, he's not Eminem). He also owns a 'grill' design company. Hmm... is that not an oxymoron or what!

Hahaha, no. I'm not black. Not even a little. I'm guessing your friend didn't get the Chinese references: J-Chou, dong fang, QQ, CCTV...
For the record I wasn't actually making fun of black people, I was making fun of whiggas ("white niggas"), whom I find really funny. And I am sure many black people (including your friend) will agree with me there. I have also seen ABCs acting like whiggas, which is equally funny.

I believe the term is chiggas, Chinese. Unless they're acting as a whigga....then I don't know.

some of us already did!

i remember seeing my neighbour in my hometown Hangzhou had gold grills when i was a kid. that was sometime in the early 1980s.

so it used to be a fashion. but i don't know how popular it was in Shanghai and in other parts of China.
