internet in shanghai... who is the best?

Postby petralian » Sun Dec 02, 2007 9:22 pm

Hi!

I just moved to shanghai (jing an temple district) and the place I am staying now has the most horrible internet connection... it's cable but it is slower than  56kb...

ORIENTAL CABLE NETWORK CO., LTD

Now I am wondering if there is a good provider here that has a good connection with the USA... I need a stable ping so I can enjoy world of warcraft (game I like to play).

Cheerios,
Nate

China Telecom has been the best so far from my experience, Eve-Online, wow, and other us/euro based are decent pings. remember, TIC

Get the CT engineer to check for noise on your line. If you plug your phone into the ADSL line direct with out the filter, if you hear any static then you need the line checking.

I had the CT engineer trace my line from my appartment all the way to the local exchange redoing all the juction connections. I gave him a hand full of cable connectors and a roll of PVC tape to do the job.

When he mentioned my Router was broken I hit him over the head with a new one and told him to set it up! CTC usual anser to internet problems is they only set it up for 1 PC connect directly to the ADSL modem, if that works they dont want to know.

You can test your connection be using the PING comand to google.com.cn, I usually get a time of 35ms, if I ping bbc.co.uk the time is 535ms! So you can get a great download speed on emule inside china but very slow connection to the USA/UK.

Sometime the internet is fast, next hour it can be slow......TIC

Speed tests are useless unless you want to know the speed of YOU -> The Speed Test site.

If you want to test *real* download speed, download something from sites inside China.

eg - www.computersolutions.cn/downloads/163. ... h_whql.exe

See what speed you get for that. If its in the 130kb/s range, then your connection is fine.

Cable is only 130kb/s +-, it is crap, and they do packet filtering, so you're better off with ADSL.

Reminds me, I had yet another call from the people that don't call asking if I want to renew my cable broadband with them. (No, I don't is my usual answer).

*I've asked their office to stop calling me, but they still call.
The office claims that no-body is calling me from OC. I beg to differ.
