iPhone map offset fixed, requires jailbreak

Postby Red Snapper » Sun Oct 10, 2010 4:30 pm

The map offset is discussed in this thread (along with the iPhone 4 specific language issue), but I thought it better to start a new thread as the offset applies to all generations of the iPhone.

In the above thread someone said that the offset is fixed in iOS 4.2. You could install the beta that's currently available on torrent networks, or wait for the official 4.2 to come out. As an alternative, you could install this app if you have already jailbroken your phone. (limera1n jailbreak for iPhone 4 just came out today)

I found this solution while Googling around for a fix to the language problem, I found this post from Mirror Dev. You will need to jailbreak your phone to do this. In Cydia, add the Mirror Dev repository as explained in their post (http://apt.mirrordev.com), however the app is no longer called MapFix but now "Location Fixed". Install it and the offset is fixed. And this has been available since May 22!

I'll also contact these guys to see if they can fix the iPhone 4 map language problem.

I would also be very interested in a fix for the language issue. I just checked London and Tokyo also have only Chinese.

Keep us posted when there's a solution/fix for the language issues.

Nice fix!

f22shift: glad you found a better solution! I hope GPS Log was useful to you pre-jailbreak :)

Cheers,
Will

Wow... this works really well. Thanks for the tip!

Interestingly, this fix seems to only apply to the Google Maps app itself, and *not* any Apps that embed a map (like GPS Log). So no need to turn off GPS Log's handling (if you use GPS Log for other things), but unfortunately embedded maps in other Apps will still be offset.

Actually if you go to Settings, and find the Chinese name for the app, you can select which apps the fix affects.

Almost certainly.

You'll have to read up a bit on how to jailbreak and how to use Cydia.

I just tested Maps on my iPhone 4 running OS4.1.... it's showing my location as being a good 500m nor-nor-west of where it should be. Looking forward to the full release of 4.2!

ABC Maps shows my location bang-on, but it has no address locator or directions. So it's only partially useful.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

Would iOS4.2 solve the language bit (for the Chinese iPhone 4)?

Probably not.

I think Google follows whatever the policy is in that particular country. For example, despite the fact that one disputed region is presently administered by India, on the Chinese version of Google Maps, it’s clearly part of China.

That said, Google put most of the street names in the world in Chinese probably because that's what the Chinese government wants.

To solve the language issue, somebody has to hack the iphone so it can can get the map info from regular Google maps instead of China's Google maps.

Agreed.

There are other regional quirks too you know – in Japan (for Japanese bought iPhones), muting the phone does *not* mute the shutter sound (you can guess why...)

I believe the Japanese are well known for their kinky habits like secretly taking pictures of girls up their skirts etc!

i remember some japanese device. it was a flashlight but sort of special. it looked like a flashlight but had IR leds at the business end. IR like security cameras use because it's invisible to the human eye but can be captured by video. Also there was a camera at the same end.

lol, indeed. The DSi also has a little LED that lights up next to the camera (and makes a sound) to prevent people from taking such photos on a subway while pretending to play their DS. ;)

I'm always taking stealthy iPhone photos actually, I love how I can make it silent, and people just think I'm using my phone. These are not pervy photos (I swear!), just taking photos of everyday life in China, like some guy cooking dumplings and the likes.
