Is it a waste of time to bring top DJs here?

After going to the Sander Kleinenberg and Johan Gielen gigs, I don't really get it. Is ther no crowd to appreciate top DJs? Are there promotional problems?
OK, so Sander was on a Wednesday, but Gielen was on a Saturday night in a new hyped-up club which was totally empty. What gives?
If there is no interest, then do the clubs just spend thousands of $$$ just to say that this guy or that guy played there?

well it was realy disappointing on saturday, and fter i listened to his music i really cannot understand that nobody showed up. i guess the problem was that the opening party was just one day before and lot of the guests just didnt wanna go out again. hopefully next time will be better

Yeah, been to both of the SK and JG gigs and half-empty the dancefloor was... Those people don't know what they have missed!

But still I don't think we can call it 'a waste of time'. There were some international djs' gigs with big crowd, like James Lavelle and Kid Koala. They were also on Wednesdays but lots of people showed up. I think timing and promotion are really important though. Keep it coming!

what do you think will happen when a fantastic Dj like Sasha comes here this weekend and only 100 paying people show up. $60 US for a ticket,, come on! Hope everyone out there gets free ones , cause the promoters don't care as they are sponsored up the a** by Chivas

And its way out in Pudong as well, Shpws us that there are not class venues here yet! (97 does not count and the people that run Rojam Suck)

Whish Ministry of Sound had actually set up here 3 years ago when they were seriously looking for a space!

OK, for one I'm sick of seeing these NO NAME Dj's who are given a rank number like they're some damn college basketball team. World's 14th best DJ !!! Sod offffff... Further, whoever decided to charge 400 rmb (or whatever) for damn Sasha can eat my damn shorts.

The turnout for Kid Koala and James Lavelle wasn't something to brag about -- and anyone who missed the Kid Koala show because it was on a weeknight -- go back to Kansas you dork ass shirt-tucker. Get a life.

Where are the heds? Foggetaboutit. This is a soulless biz boom town. And the local cool cats can't afford the entry fee for these oh so special laowai Djs...

They went to Bangkok instead, and failed miserably.

Actually trendy Bangkok was probably a good market for them, but they picked a an out-of-the-way location (down a small street, not within walking distance of other similar spots) and it was just too big.

Great music, great AV system, great DJs... but it'd be empty until about midnight, or just looked empty as it was so big, and with the 2am (then 1am) closings the numbers didn't add up.

Actually mate, they were going to set up here at the same time but i guess cause they were going Bankrupt in England did not have the cash. Too bad for them!

Look out for the New DKD next month on Chongqing lu and Huai hai. Should be worth a few nights out for sure.

DKD will be open mid december.

Anyways in regards to bringing in big name DJs... to me there is a difference between bringing in a DJ and THROWING A PARTY. My biggest gripe w/ all of the big name Trance DJs that have been here is that no marketing and promoting was done at all. There were no print flyers and very few posters.. pretty much if I wasn't a frequenter of local electronic music BBS's, i'd have no idea that these DJs were even here.

Also, when i went to go see these DJs, yeah it's great for a DJ like me because I allready know the DJ and I allready know/understand the music, but for everyone else, there is NOTHING to differentiate a night at a club w/ a International DJ from a night at a club w/ a normal DJ. People here don't know the difference!

The best parties I've been to in Shanghai have NOT been superstar DJ parties.. they've been mostly lesser known DJs. Why? Because at those parties work is actually done to PROMOTE the party... for example.. I don't know if anyone remembers but there was a DJ party at Rojam the same night as Paul Oakenfold. I opted for the Rojam party because even though i didn't have a clue who the DJs were, i read that they were bringing in their own lightsystem, their own dancers, etc. See THAT is cool. I walked into Rojam that day and it didn't feel like Rojam, it felt like something special, something someone had done work for to make it seem like it wasn't "just another night" at Rojam.

Another Example would be the DKD Tsunami Beach Parties. Look how many Beach Parties there were this summer, which ones were the best, the ORIGINAL Tsunami parties. Why? Because they know how to throw a party, and they know how to promote.

Sasha may be hella **** expensive, but what I like is AT LEAST those guys are doing proper marketing for that party. There are ads and flyers all over the city, they've posted pics of their visual system, the have a humungous space and they've invited all of the top local DJs to come spin with Sasha. They are also having crazy Chivas drink specials and even free breakfast (for VIP tickets). I'm hoping that that party will set a better precedent for electronic music parties here in Shanghai, showing that to throw a good party you need to do more than just stick a DJ behind a pair of decks and just expect people to come.

The Clubbing & Music industry here is just like any other emerging market- it needs to be educated, and it needs to mature. Furthermore, if you ever wanna make money on an event, you HAVE to find a way to market to locals and not just rely on the expats, that's how you LOSE money.

Perhaps Trance, DnB, Breaks or anything not house is still too underground here, who knows? Or perhaps people here haven't been trained to differentiate between different styles of electronic music... but all will come in time. My suggestion would be, if anything, support the local DJs who try weekend after weekend to build up a scene for these big name DJs... because without local DJs, there's really just no market for International DJs.

Unfortunately Ministry of Sound in Taipei is not doing that well either.. and Taipei has a much larger proportion of people who club than Shanghai does. To be honest I don't think Shanghai is ready for an MOS... yet. Unless it was like, a mini MOS. Our club scene just doesn't have the numbers to support a super club like that.
