Jazz?

Postby anter » Fri Sep 03, 2010 6:26 am

Where are the best bars, clubs and restaurants with Jazz band and singer?
Not the Jazz with the ten minute self indugent drum solo.
Easy listening and standard Jazz.
I have to take someone out for work tomorrow night and they requested this.

Thank you

Now you got me curious about where to find jazz with the self indulgent 10-minute drum solos. Sounds awesome.

The husband and I quite like Brick, on Sinan Lu. Have only been to JZ Club on Fuxing once, was a Latin jazz evening, it was really very good.
Cack, my blog is buggered.

JZ has a pretty good vibe. The style of music will obviously depend on which night you go. I think Friday nights are Latin nights. You could take your client upstairs where the music isn't quite as in-your-face.

Down the road, the Cotton Club has a black American diva who sings most nights. The house band is always the same. They are competent musicians but the music tends towards blues rather than jazz.

There's a "House of Blues and Jazz" near the Bund somewhere. Again, atmosphere is OK but I really don't know what music they play or whether the club is even still going.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

Oh, one other option: I think the bar up on the 94th-odd floor of the WFC in Pudong may have a resident jazz band with a singer. This would probably be ideal, as the venue itself is most impressive.

JZ is not too bad, on weekdays though. I think they play salsa during weekends (fuxing lu near yongfu lu). House of Jazz and Blues used to be good, but haven't been in a while (fuzhou lu, near bund). If you like gipsy jazz, Enoteca on taicang lu (the newer one) has a pretty good band playing every wednesday...

They do actually, but the band wasn't all that good to be honest. Agree that the venue is great though!

I like the streaming jazz (at home) online at

http://www.smoothjazz.com/

Click on "Listen Now" at left. Then make it a bookmark. Great stereo jazz, real easy listening music - perfect to unravel a messy China day, streams through to China straight, no interruptions or breakages.

I'm enjoying as I type. Zak in Suzhou.

Trust me - nice for home, but if you want the real thing in SH then I have no idea..... Please advise. i mean Really good Jazz in Shanghai. You say.

Should be Brown Sugar. Behind/Next to Luna. It's jazz-y, and Shanghai-classy (with "blingy" stuff). I quite liked it when I went there.

House of Blues and Jazz is nice. For your business-related outing, I'd recommend this.

I haven't been to JZ Club for a long time, but during those days I was going, it was pretty good. They used to have a "big band" every Friday/Saturday night.

thanks alegna - i might stop by there tonight for a night-cap... wasn't planning on going out but can't seem to fall asleep (though i'm exhausted!) maybe a nice walk around the neighborhood and a glass of bourbon will do the trick.

Everyone, thank you. ::kiss::
Based on the above I think it will be either JZ, House of Jazz and Blues or the 94th floor of WFC Pudong or maybe we will go to two or three of the venues.
Hm, a black diva at the Cotton Club, especially if she sounded like Nina Simone would be devine.
Or a white Jazz singer with a sound like Blossom Dearie.

I'd opt for Latin and salsa over jazz but maybe not this time.

Are all the great Jazz performers like...
Miles Davis
Blossom Dearie
Frank Sinatra
Django Reinhardt
.......dead ?

Dave Brubeck is 90.

Sadly, the black diva Sugar Mama, passed away recently. She was a force and she is missed.

Lots of talented musicians here in Shanghai, and the JZ Club is a reliable spot to hear them, with a good vibe to boot. It does get crowded during peak hours on the weekends. Even more so on Friday's for the Latin/Salsa night, most likely because the band is not only legit, but pretty damn good.

As for easy listening/Muzak, I recommend scheduling an appointment for a teeth cleaning. Dentist's always seem to play that crap in their waiting rooms.

House of Blues and Jazz. Sat night.
It was Blues, with a dash of Jazz. I dislike Blues almost as much and Country but the food was good.
Shall return when they have Jazz.

I'm quite taken with Latin and the Salsa so shall try JZ next Friday. Cheers Buzzd.
Funny I have never heard easy listening Jazz at the dentist but perhaps you can suggest one with muzac including any Brazil 66 or Bosanova of any kind.

sergio mendes alone is fine, joao gilberto, veloso, and yes, even good old sinatra.

there are uncountable bossa compilations , including some "electro bossa" ones which are worth a try, now, if you looking for someting similar to the oldschool mendes+b66 sound, my take is: you wont find :)

what a coincidence, my itunes list just started playing mendes+b66 - day tripper

traveller2 - I think you will find this one under 50's Popular Music but thanks for bringing it up. I just love it. Now I'm going to be singing it all weekend.

What next?
JZ a bit crowded.
Not into Blues = no to House of Jazz and Blues or Cotton Club if they are playing Blues.
Any other suggestions of Jazz venue on a Saturday night? Thank you.

anter, a friend of a friend of my brother just finished a multi-week jazz gig at the ritz-carlton. just saying "ritz-carlton" sounds too expensive on the face of it, but maybe it's worth checking out to see if they feature a jazz theme all the time.

i'm following your discoveries with interest, especially if you find some nice straight-ahead jazz.
