Kaien English Language School

Postby P123 » Mon Feb 25, 2008 2:44 am

Hi, can anyone who has studied with this school please share your comments?
My gf is planning to study here and i would be interested to hear others thoughts on: standard of tuition, course structure, teachers etc before forking over the cash.
Many thanks in advance.

If you're a native speaker she won't get anything from Kaien that she wouldn't get from you. Lessons are based on practising what students already know to improve fluency; they don't really learn anything new. It's useful for those who have limited contact with native speakers.

Depends on her level. If she is doing basic English then the courses are good
provided she also puts in the work. She will get a good grounding at KaiEn.

As a former teacher at kaien I can tell you they are a very unpofessional school.
most of the teachers are good at what they do but the material is just awful and they also have a habit of not paying staff up tp two or three months at a time so you end up with people who really dont care a whole lot what the students complaints are.

Must be a bitter teacher to dig up this old thread from over 18mths ago. Maybe he still hasn't found a better job.

That said - KaiEn - haven't ever known too many foreign teachers who feel satisfied with this employer after having worked there for more than a couple of years. I've been here nearly 10yrs, and never heard too much positive about them - and met many unhappy teachers. Where there's smoke there's fire.

Head some good, some bad things about KaiEn. More bad than good, but then bad rumors travel faster don't they? I believe this was started by the same guy that does Chinapod. Obviously he knows his stuff, but I'm not sure what if any relationship he has with them any more. I'm under the impression that they used to be considered good back when there weren't many English training options in Shanghai, but that standards have slipped badly.
