Krabi - Any suggestions?

Postby winpetung » Thu Jul 26, 2007 3:55 pm

Hi! I'm heading to Krabi with 2 kids (2 & 5 yrs old) in 2 weeks' time. It'll be a 4D/4N trip. Any suggestions on where to stay and what to do? I'm very keen on elephant trekking.

Tks for your help.

Not knowing your budget....Here is a site we use frequently to book trips.

www.hotelthailand.com

You have three sort of basic choices in Krabi.
Krabi Town
Ao Nang Beach
Klong Muang Beach - Sheraton, Sofitel are located here. Probably the higher end of the market

Koh Lanta is another option from there. Aliitle harder to get there. 1.5-2 2 hour van ride from the Krabi airport, which can be arrange through your hotel. A little further away means a little less expensive and crowded.

Elephant trekking is sort of a northern Thai thing. Really not sure if there are any in the Krabi area. If there are, they would be a "staged for the tourists" thing.

Have fun!!!
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.....Dave Barry

SOrry I dont know about Krabi BUT...I just came back from Koh Chang. Might be an option as well?

Koh Chang is a very laid back island, not a lot of sex tourists, and with the regular elephant, snorkeling, bungalow thing...

Check out this site here, great info: http://www.iamkohchang.com

It totally depends on what you are looking for. Krabi town is full of bars, restaurants, shopping options etc. It also has a stretch of beach which usually is crowded because its in the town.

Klong Muang Beach is a bit out of town. Its very peaceful and has some lovely resorts (Check out www.tubkaak.com I stayed here for a week and was absolutely fantastic). But you will either have to take the hotel bus at fixed times or rent a car to move around.

Koh Lanta or another resort, sorry I dont remember the name, is further out of town.

These places which are placed out of town tend to be quite exclusive, read expensive, and very relaxing. But with the kids I guess you will need something more active and around town areas.

All the best !

In Krabi I always stay at the Sheraton Hotel, which has it's own baby elephant on site. You can read independent reviews of the hotel on my favorite travel website, www.tripadvisor.com. Nice shell covered beach there, and the hotel is located in a mangrove forest, which provides a lot of interesting animal sightings. Beside the hotel are a number of small restaurants, massage places, and travel agencies, and just down the street is a catfish farm/mini zoo, opened by an American woman and her Thai husband. She came to Thailand something like 20 years ago after college, and never went back to the states. At her place you can see alligators, huge catfish, and all sorts of other creepy crawlies.

For an unforgettable island like experience, stay on Railay beach, a roadless peninsula cut off from the mainland by mountains, and drop dead picture postcard gorgeous. There are a variety of lodging options there, from the 600 dollar a night Rayavadee Resort, to 10 dollar a night rooms with cold showers and fan cooling. The slow season lasts through the end of October, so go there while it's still relatively quiet. Activities include rock climbing, island hopping by long tail boat, hiking, monkey spotting, and watching western kids who've been vacationing there a bit too long play with fire sticks at night. Railay beach can only be reached by boat.

For those who don't want take a boat to their hotel, or don't have a Sheraton Budget, stay on the striking Ao Nang beach, also in Krabi. The lodging options there are endless, and the village is really lovely. Rent a motorbike for 250 a day and check out the local. There's a lot to see, and the beach has got to be one of the country's most scenic.

I was just in Krabi in June, in Ao Nang beach. It was our first trip with our 8 month old and we stayed at a resort called Lai Thai Resort. It was great. The service was excellent and friendly, and the environment was beautiful. Here is a link to their website. http://www.laithai-resort.com/
We went during low season, so our superior bungalow cost only 2000. i think there are prices on their website. By the way, the pictures they have on their website do not do the place justice. it's much prettier there than it looks on their website

Dear all,

Many thanks for your suggestions. I just found out that there's a riding club where I can send my 5-yr old to.

Cheers,
Winnie
