Live music

Postby picassov7 » Thu Nov 18, 2010 10:26 pm

Previously, I lived in Chengdu for 3 years and Beijing for 1. The music scene in Beijing was not bad, but it was pitiful in Chengdu. How is the scene in Shanghai? Is it possible to get out and see decent live shows (Chinese & Western)? Are they all in Puxi? What types of music are most prevalent? Thoughts?

Really, nothing?! In Chengdu, one of the main live music venues was called the 'Little Bar' and it was tiny. It was hillarious to watch a band try to squeeze on stage for a show, especially since it seemed to cater mostly to Punk music.

Is the live scene in Shanghai exclusively punk or are there jazz, blues, rock, etc bands playing around town?

Sh is more about Jazz Music, the Rock Scene is ''ok'' just nothing comparable to Beijing.

Some good places for Rock:
Yuying Tan
Mao
Dream Factory

Jazz:
Cotton Club
House of Bleues&Jazz

You can find all the adresses on smartshanghai.com
You can add me on msn: radioheadbest@hotmail.com

Greg712-

Thank you so much for the heads up! I am excited about living in a Chinese city that still has some kind of local music scene.

There are some great places to listen to music in this city, just need to visit all of them!

I understand Time Passage has the best cover band in town (Sultans of Swing).

Appreciate that Greeneyedlady. I suppose the vast majority of these venues are located in Puxi?

^Yup.... I live in Pudong and have to cross the river every time for some decent entertainment... If you live in Pudong you could always go to Malone's on the weekend. I think they have live music at that location.

Time Passage wasn't bad last night if it wasn't so crowded. The band was good but a little lazy with cutting their set short. I found this very irritating because the audience was very appreciative of how they were playing and they were indifferent.

Picassov7 - if you know of any good places you find, post it here so we can check them out. Thanks!

Will definitely let you know if we come across anything. Unfortunately, we will probably be in the same situation as you since we are planning on living in Pudong.
