Looking for 1BR apt.

Postby kappakai » Tue Apr 05, 2005 2:46 am

Hi all-

Trying to get an idea on locations, prices, etc.

What I'm looking for:

1. Something center city between Hongqiao and Pudong. We have an office in Hongqiao, where I'll be mostly working, but warehouse and manufacturing facilities in Pudong.

2. 1BR apt; living room, furnished, gym, and a bathtub.

3. No cheesy Chinese places with gaudy chandeliers, white walls and bright beech cabinetry.

4. Convenient to bus/subway.

5. Expats around, Japanese, overseas Chinese, American and European, preferably younger (~25)

6. I wouldn't mind having a garden. I know that limits me probably to some oof the older Chinese style apartments, or a townhome. Otherwise, high rise works.

7. Budget is still being worked out with corporate. Thinking anywhere from 800-1600 USD.

8. Oh, and how is construction quality these days? The only reason I'm asking is cause I plan to bring my studio setup, which includes a subwoofer, and I'd rather not bother the neighbors at 128 BPM. I'd probably setup a sound dampening rig, but who knows.

Is rent usually paid in RMB or USD? Would be a good time to take advantage of black market RMB rates.

You should be able to find something, but you will have to look around. There is a tremendous range and often it really depends on how desperate the landlord is.

If you find a good agent who will show you in the price range you want, you should be able to come with something quickly. Some people likke to do it themselves, but if you do not have language skills ( speaking and reading Chinese) and you do not know the area - you will need some help.

Rent almost always paid in RMB - unless the landlord is out of the country.

i'm currently looking for a apt, too.
my experience is that apts are usually like what u hate unfortunately (white walls+gaudy chandeliers...) if they u furnished.
so prepare for the disappointment.

kind of hard to find a 1-bed apt, but no worries.
u have enough money to rent a bigger one.

and the walls r thin.
u always hear what 's on ur neighbour's tv.
so if u want to set up a studio, need good sound-proofing.

good luck. bye.
