I can say without a doubt that Mayur is by far the best. The food is great (even for vegetarians). The price is just right (comparing to similar restaurants in India). The service is perfect. Make sure you arrive early on weekends, because it really fills up.

and not to forget Adiva (Turkish) at 1333 Huaihai Zhong Lu, near Baoqing Lu

Adiva was being renovated 2 weeks ago, not sure if they re open now.

I quite liked Masala Art when I ordered through Sherpa's once (I was not very strict since it was delivery). I also tried Masala Desi (ate there) and I found the tastes too mild and westernised. It is to be expected on Dagu lu of course.

Kebabs on the grille is indeed indian, but they do offer kebabs. I thought the kebabs were so and so but the rest of the dishes on their Sunday buffet are good.

Try the GRAND TAJ in Gubei...

That's the price you pay for living in Pudong.

Fear not - there is always the sanitized version of Cantina Agave in Jinqiao.

I heard a rumor some time ago that there was a service in Pudong running tiffin to all the Indian IT workers out there. They also did the bachelor's "meal packs". I.e 5 or 6 pre-prepared dinners that you just hot up when you get home at night. Not sure if this is still a going concern.

So last night went to Masala Art and:

Bad : no onion bajis available, no sauces with poppadoms provided, service was so so (had to ask a few times for cutlery and plates), thought the samosa's lacked flavour and too much pastry.
Good : other starters were nice, main courses were good and tasty, portion sizes were good, nans were nice and fluffy, price worked out about 150rmb each including a couple of beers, chairs were comfy, crockery was stylish.

So I would recommend it, they don't have a huge selecion of dishes, but I actually prefer this to a restaurant that offers 10's of courses, which always makes me wonder how fresh the food will be. Didn't make it to Beedee's as we'd all stuffed our faces, and were ready for bed. Enjoy.

Yes, there is in Zhang Jiang. The food is pretty damn good, a friend had them deliver some food and it was possibly the best indian food I've had out here tbh...

now if only I could remember the name...

I've only been to Bukhara, as many people tell me it's the best. I think it's great, but quite pricey, and the location on Hongmei Lu (Gubei) is rather inconvenient. Their tandoori items are terrific, very smokey, the whole joint has a wonderful tandoori smell.

How do these other restaurants compare to Bukhara?

I agree that Bukhara is overpriced. And to me, tastes no better than Masala Art. But when I have Indian clients in town, especially one's who are vegetarian, I don't F around I take them to Bukhara. They always seem to be impressed with the Indian manager, who always comes by to chat in Hindi; and I have been told by Indians on more than one occation that the food there is exactly the way it would taste back home, as in they source imported spices/ingredients. Finally, they don't mess around when making vegetarian dishes; a complete separate kitchen, no meat ever comes close. To many Indians that is very important, as many Chinese restaurants will cook their veggie dishes in the same wok that just fried some pork.

Bukhara has a great sunday lunch buffet for 150rmb, including beer/ soft drinks.
We tried it last sunday, very satisfied.

I took a visiting Indian friend who was homesick for Indian food to Masala Art and he said it was good, didn't rave about it but didn't scream and clutch his throat either. Love Masala Desi next door too, their masala dosa is always good especially if one is feeling 'a little the worse for wear'
