looking for a good Indian place

Postby badger02 » Sun Jan 29, 2012 11:43 am

Going for a curry this coming Friday. My usual place, Vedas, is relocating and am waiting for an answer back from them when they are going to reopen.

If they aren't, where would you recommend for a decent, but not too expensive curry.

Prefer Puxi area, have tried Bukkhara in Gubei (OK) and Lotus Land on Taikang Lu (nice place but food a bit bland).

So where would you go to satisfy your taste buds ?

So when was the last time you were at Masala Art ?
Had a look at the reviews on Cityweekend and Smartshanghai of all the indian places, and they are mostly at least 6 months old.
Dagu Lu could be a good place as then we can go to Beedee's afters for more beer and watch some band.

Was there last Tuesday with friends. Just as good as ever. Masala Desi next door good too. They share kitchens and cooks I think. Art more upmarket a setting, Desi more like a cafe.

I've never been into Masala Art, only Desi. The focus there is more on South Indian which I'm more interested in. Great food.

I just wish there was a good Sri Lankan joint in town. There is one, out past Hongmei Lu, but it has zero ambience.

Masala Art is my personal choice. I had it last night and it's still excellent, you cannot go wrong. I used to be a Vedas customer until I discovered Masala Art. They only have one branch which is on Dagu Lu.

Had Masala Art over CNY for the first time, and it is now my favorite Indian joint in town.

Oh but I do wish they had a better drink menu; maybe it was due to the holidays, but many wines from the menu was not availiable.

As a rule I would avoid drinking wine with curry, unless it's a massive Aussie shiraz from, say, Rutherglen.

Thought about kebabs on the grille, I do love a good kebab (the wife is on a girlie holiday in vietnam for a week starting tomorrow so reckon I'll have to pop down to the Turkish place on Hengshan Lu to get some of their kebabs), anyway back on topic, how expensive is Kebabs on the grille?

I tend to avoid anywhere on the Bund due to the normally inflated prices (was paying 110rmb for an average sized glass of house white at Vue bar over CNY, but then again it was a treat).

^ I think the name is misleading it's an Indian restaurant not a kebab place, but it's very decent and similar price to Masala Art. It's not on the main (expensive) Bund part but much further south, so no crazy Bund prices. Anadola on Heng Shan road does great kebabs and they have a brand just next to Xintiandi if that location is closer for you.

Sorry, yes I knew that kebabs on the grille was an indian, but I thought they did indian flavoured meat served on skewers hence the name, maybe I'm wrong as not been there before.

Thanks for the tip on Anadola, is that the kebab place underneath the 1001 Nights restaurant ? If it is, then been there before and will try again.

Price is about the same as Bukkhara. They have a good weekend brunch for 150RMB.

^ Yes and a branch in Xintiandi, sorry it's actually a typo it's called Anadolu. There's also Kervan at 706 Hankou road just by Raffles City and I quite like Pasha at 262 Nanchang Road (near Ruijin road), all Turkish. I'm sure Kebabs On The Grille do the skewer type stuff, yes.

Ah - but is there food any good? If they can make good egg hoppers and a decent coconut/chilli sambal then I'm willing to forgive any sort of ambience.

They are also on Mealbay (although it always takes ages till the food arrives)

We kind of order always the same  afghani aloo (potatoes stuffed with cheese, minced potato and nuts, blended with herbs and spices), baingan ka bharta (mashed eggplant cooked with spiced tomato) and daal makhani (black lentils cooked with exotic spices, tomato puree ginger, garlic and rich creamy butter sauce)
Dunno how the meat dishes are though :)

Ha ha!
Adelaide being the longest part of my Oz living, I'm very much a Barossa/Coonawarra/McLaren man!

Yes, I miss the curries prepared at Indian restaurants in Oz - certainly better than the Shanghai ones - must be the quality of the raw materials.

Hoppers are indeed an art, and I'm not sure whether they are on the menu.

But now you have me drooling. I'm thinking...yellow rice...kukulmas curry...crab curry...potato fry...seeni sambol...coconut sambol. All washed down with some icy cold pilsner. It's driving me crazy.

Vedas have not replied to my email asking when they would reopen, so have booked a table at Masala Art instead. And my wife left today for a weeks girlie holiday, so it's just me, the lodger and my dog to fend for ourselves.

How will we cope ??? but I can smell kebabs tonight, then could be pizza tomorrow, mexican on wednesday .........

Relax furry friend. You probably want to wait a few days after they open their doors anyhow to let them iron out potential problems.

Hopefully the new re-boot will inject some life into what was becoming a rather moribund restaurant. New pricing and portion sizing would be welcome. Quality had definitely slid, although Vedas on a bad day still tops out the competition. Their nans and anything out of the tandoor is impossible to best.
