Mac Book needs HELP

Postby solohobo » Fri Sep 16, 2011 5:32 pm

Out of the blue my 3 year old Macbook is super slow and the fan is running full tilt like some program is on, I ran the MacKeeper and Virus Scan no help, baby is very hot underneath too...

What the heck? When can I take this baby for a look and fix, its out of warranty.

take it to the apple shop. They can run diagnostics without charge. If some component is f'ucked, then you gotta pay up

Yea I have been using Firefox when it started to go bezerk...

But I removed it and the Skype as they tend to slow it down in the past. Why I have no idea...

I second downloading iStatPro from http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
then checking what is causing the cpu load.

Might be the search stuff - that sometimes goes wobbly if the disk has issues.
Also open up Disk Utility, do a Verify, then Disk Check, see if anything wrong there.

Thanks-

When I do a Disk Utility, Verify, what do I choose? Shows 3 items, Fujitsu 11.8 GB, Macintosh HD, and Matshita DVD-R?

Cheers

You dont need istat pro. Just open up activity monitor. That utility will list all your open processes and how much CPU power they are using. Look for something really high if your fans are going nuts. Usually it is Safari that is culprit but you said you are using Firefox. Let us know what you find.

If the fan is running full blast might be something is overheating or you got half a kilo of woolly dust inside.

Also try resetting the PRAM. Restart the computer while holding down the "P" and "R" keys. Just keep holding those keys down until you hear the computer's restart "chime" three times in a row. (Usually just a few seconds between chimes.) Then let go of the keys and allow the computer to restart normally.

Fan speed is sometimes a firmware issue. PRAM (paramater RAM) holds the firmware settings in a separate memory location. Sometimes they go funny and need to be reset.

Or you can swing it by my office today and I take a looksie. Address on our website, suggest call to confirm I'm around (although I plan to be).

Generally speaking, Mac's are pretty good - they generally only have issues when the hardware is flaking out, so make sure you've backed up etc etc.

Wine is a Windows Emulator.
Intercheck is apparently Sophos Antivirus.

Thats probably your problem right there, remove that.
The first page of links for Intercheck has people bitching about it causing excessive cpu load etc.

For what its worth, you don't currently need A/V software on Mac as there are no viruses in circulation.
There are a handful of trojans, and a few malware things (mostly flash derived), but very very very rare.

For followup - the issue was that Sophos Antivirus was hosing the system as suspected.
Removed that. Removed MacScan.

System started responding normally again. Gee, A/V Software that hoses the computer, whats new.
System doesn't have enough ram either (1G only), so going to be upgrading that too.
