Manufacturing / Export set up

Postby ShiMaiDe » Sun Apr 26, 2009 6:49 pm

My friend and I (both American) are starting an underwear line and hoping to sell to distrubutors in different country's. We both live in China and I was wondering if someone with a similar backround or experience could answer some questions.

This is a small start up with very little capital. Where does this business need to be registered? US? China? HK? What is the cheapest way to go about that. We are not looking for a Chinese partner nor do we plan on selling domestically.

Where do I look for product insurance on clothes? Is this necessary and what are the newest US regulations on importing bamboo fabric into the US?

How much does it cost to trademark the product name in China? I am told a foreigner has to go through another company or agent to trademark a product name.

What is some other start up advice you can offer?

Thanks.

Well, well, well,.............once again we await the americans.

Typically, they issue a plea for help and then go running off.

The OP was a request for help. They envision selling underwear.
So.................? Send PICS ! LOL

Has anyone tried that bamboo fabric that the OP hints at ?

I found bath towels made of maybe 30% bamboo and cotton.
A very nice feel !

Is it being done already for underwear? More Pics ?

Wow, some excellent help in this forum. A crack at my "mother tongue" and a comment that was an apparent attack on the Americans? We're saddened, truly. Great to know there are such busines gurus here.

There is a lot of SPAM on this forum so people get a bit wary.

We own a export trading company with our main office in Shaoxing near Ningbo and we are located in Shanghai for several years. Our main business is the synthetic leather market however we also deal with fabric and other products. We have agents in and export to Europe, North America, Middle East, South East Asia and some to South America.

Send me a PM with more details on who you are and what you want to do if you are interested.

If you are only buying in China, to sell outside, you can set up a company where you pay the least taxes. HK corporate tax is not much, BVI is zero. I have a private trading company, buying in China for export, and I set up a BVI company in 2000. Worked perfectly for me so far. No need to set up anyhting in China, if you are not invoicing Chinese customers.

I can't answer your question about the product insurance, as I have no experience with that. And forget the trademark registration, you won't need it unless you are selling here in big quantities, which from what I take from your post you are not. Also in a country without the rule of law, the value of such a registration is not very much. Hope this helps.

You don't need to set up a company here. Just find a factory that can make the stuff for you, pay them the cash, check it before sending and then get them to send the stuff to the US.

On the US side it's best to set up your own company to import the stuff and then sell to your customer.

It's a lot easier than you might imagine. Don't bother about tax issues at the moment as I am assuming it will be a few years before you make any decent money on this.

Just get the thing up and running first for least cost and hassle.

Don't listen to anyone that puts you down or laughs at your idea. When I first touted my idea to friends they taunted me with "Who do you think you are? Richard Branson?" They're still slaves in their crappy office jobs and will be til 65 whilst I've spent 5 years enjoying myself and making money in China.
