I just bought Mario Kart for Wii and the steering wheel but was disappointed to find it didn't work on my Wii. I then bought a second copy of the software and that also didn't work so I am guessing it's a problem with my Wii which has so far played everything else without any problems.

I got the Wii in May 2007 so well over a year ago. Do I need a firmware update or some kind of modification?

You need a firmware update for your WII Key if its a "real one".

If not, you'll need to get it re-chipped. +-2-300rmb

Yeah, we bought a Wii Fit. Didn't work, took the machine into the shop, they updated the firmware in about 5 mins. Works fine now.
