Matreshka, what a mess

Got a recipe? A restaurant recommendation? Got a comment about eating and drinking? Post something in the FOOD forum.

And we'll have a nation of blimped out fatties in about 10 years, akin to.. well... most countries in the Western world. Ah, the irony

10 years? I see parents at my gym who have dragged their 14 and 15 year old kids in there to physically force them on the stairmaster to work out. These obese kids can't even put down their Nintendos while the "exercise" on the treadmills. It's tragic.

Fat children make me sick to look at. But they're only partially to blame over here. Some of the blame has to go to their ayis and nannies and grannies, who spent the day just ramming food and drinks into their cakeholes to keep them happy. Also, the overabundance of advertising of fast food on TV.

^^There's a chinese kid at my gym, looks around 14 (I would say 10 but this is China), that comes with 2 adults who supervise him while he hits the weights and carries a 1lt carton of imported milk around the room drinking between sets. What's up with that?

Point is, can he lift more than you? Maybe you need 2 adults and a carton of niu nai to get your supersets going.

I m no bodybuilder but thankfully a random 14-year-old chinese boy cannot outlift me. My guess is he is underdeveloped and they think that drinking milk WHILE exercising will help. I have read that drinking (chocolate) milk right after lifting weights helps the muscles recover, so it is not the craziest health-related perception of chinese people.

This 13 or 14 year old boy comes to my gym all the time with his dad. The dad nags and goads him into doing treadmill or elliptical exercises. Truth be told they do very little working out. The dad hectors the son and the son makes braying and squealing noises and complains about everything. For a 13 year old he is a land whale. Grossly obese and squinty-eyed - he exhibits no sign of any personality other than a-hole. The dad after about half an hour of begging and nagging gets him on the treadmill for 20 min. After that they spend about an hour in the change room while dad gives son a complete massage and pat down. The ENTIRE time son has his Gameboy locked in his pudgy little fist and doesn't ever look up from it even while barking and screeching at dad. I'ts enough to make you slit your wrists from despair if it wasn't for the obvious pleasure that Dad takes in spending time and fussing over his son despite all his bitching.

Wait.. what? Oh yes, this thread was about something else, wasn't it.

I don't even know what Matreshka is, but presumably it's some crap restaurant that someone took umbrage with.

Roll on the comment-on-the-quoted-upon-quoted-upon post :|

Look, don't care about your job, mate. But obviously it's 90% fannying around, so you're probably working in a financial company or something :D Those tossers do nothing, or so I'm lead to believe.

Nah, I'm not a Mac owner, either, and kinda despise this Mac-thralled society, where everyone worships Steve Jobs. Why just yesterday, I bought a new Blackberry phone, sir, when all around me people were buying anything with a small 'i' before it :D

Not a tree hugger, either, but have climbed a few when drunk in my time.

My issue is this, and maybe it'll ring some bells with some people here. I've been here a year and a half. I've passed through all the culture shock stages and recently found out that I'll be staying here another year before me and the missus move on (and she's Shanghainese and has told me all about the crimes against food that go on here). I'm trying to make the most of this place, and have vacillated wildly from not trusting a bite I eat to just giving anything a shot. But the people who just say "don't eat anything; don't even smell or look at the food" do my head in. Espousing McDonalds, when they're probably the very people that bash that same company when they're back home or in the company of friends. This argument has just become annoyingly cyclical and redundant, with no outcome. Shanghai street and (most) restaurant food = bad... Fruit = bad... Air = bad... Water = bad... Chefs = not to be trusted... Everything = a safety hazard. Makes me wonder why anyone is actually staying here if they perceive everything that passes their lips to be a threat to their health. Must be scary to live like this.

Why the hell were Matreshka's posts deleted?

They were distinctly on topic...

A restaurant comes on here and retaliates against a "bad review", and it get's deleted? WTH?

I should have saved the bloody lot and sent it to one of the Shanghai magazines... seriously, I'm sure it would have been deemed quite newsworthy over there. What the hell are you guys playing at?

There's a story for you; websites bowdlerizing content that might irate their sponsors. It's nothing new, but if you had a mind, you could write a good article on it

Well I for one have no reason to doubt the motives of the OP and will not be going any time soon. I've worked in restaurants and can spot a whinging, hard to please, spoiled expat having a bitch and a moan for no reason. This isn't one of those. A lot of the issues are very minor and petty but when you add them all up in one sitting it is a pretty poor indication of the way the place is run at the moment.

Pity really, I miss Russian restaurants from my days in Beijing where there were abundant choices. Not my favourite food but was good now and then especially in winter.

You know, the restaurant has the right to rebut what was said, or to vindicate their actions, but they don't seem to have taken it. If they really are a user of this website, and expats are somewhat their bread and butter (excuse the pun), then you'd think it'd be in their interests to offer some response.

If it was a hoax as Mod 4 says it was a very convincing one. I rather suspect that it was a genuine set of responses from Pavel who then realised what damage he was doing to the restaurant and contacted Shexpat to deny it was him who'd made them. I think that was the hoax.
