Mom of 1year old,new in Shanghai

Postby ayeshag » Fri Dec 24, 2004 4:55 pm

Hi all,
I'm new to this website and I'm hoping to relocate to Shanghai in March '05 along with my husband and 18 month old.
I've been to Hongkong many many times and am told that Shanghai is similar but with the area being much bigger.
I'd like some help in getting started i e where to look for good apartments, how the public transportation system is like, how the schooling system is (we're coming on a three year contract.)
etc.
Is there any one out here who is in a similar situation or has been in a similar situation but is now exprerienced (!!) who can help me?....
Tks

if you have a family and are also looks for support from an expat community try looking for accomodation in the PuDong Area (try looking for apartments in either Diamond Court, or Green Court), there are a lot of families around there and in the last six months it has developed quite a few shops, eateries and has a all in one shop just down the road. BUT this area is approx a 20 min taxi ride away from Puxi

Hi Ayeshag:

I work for a company specialized in residential relocation, named Joanna Real Estate. We have 5 offices in China (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Suzhou) and more than a decade of experience in this businessline.

Not only do we offer orientation (including explanation on how the public transportation works, school visits, etc.), home search (offering the widest property choice in Shanghai) but also airport pick-up, administrative assistance (to obtain the necessary documents for you and your family to live in Shanghai), after-sales service, etc. In all, we offer a "one-stop" solution to respond to your residential relocation needs.

All of our services are for free (excluding the government fees to obtain the documents to work & live in Shanghai and excluding the fees related to the lease, that is to say the rent & management fees for which we offer very competitive rates).

Our services are dedicated to expatriates with a certain level of housing budget.

Please feel free to contact me directly at cyril@joannarealestate.com.cn for further information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Like the realtors said, there are some really nice places to live in PuDong. But it may not be an option, depending on where your husband works. I work on the far west side of Shanghai Province and have to commute everyday for about an hour 1 way from Pu Xi.
If we lived in PuDong (where most of my wife's expat friends live) then my daily commute would be nearly 2 hours one way (3-4 hours a day just sitting in traffic).
My point is: even though alot of expats live in PuDong, there are plenty of nice places to live on the other side of the river. Personally I think PuXi is more interesting too, because its the older part of town and there's more going on.
regards,
b
