Moving to Shanghai - need help

Postby sspradley » Mon Mar 15, 2004 2:41 am

I am moving to Shanghai for an expat assignment. My company has offices in Pudong and Puxi (Shanghai Mart). Because I will bring my wife and 2 children several things are important to me. We will need to live in a house and proximity to either of the sites (listed above) and the best international schools is important.

Can you tell me what the pro's and con's of Puxi are versus Pudong. How far is the Puxi area from the best International Schools - and what are the best international schools in Pudong (I recently saw the SAS in Pudong and it was very far away and seemed quite desolate there).

Thanks in advance.

Pudong is a new district of Shanghai, there is only one metro line between Pudong and Puxi.
Most of the shoping centres and resturants are in Puxi.

Pudong is less crowded and has better fresh air than Puxi. But its more convenient for shopping and eating out at Puxi. Concordia (Pudong) and Yew Chung (Puxi) International School are close to most residential area. I like to stay at Pudong and play at Puxi.

hi, there. I would like to request how much for a smaller apt for one single to stay. I may need to move to Shanghai in May. I was looking at some local apt last week. No sure if I would like to stay in local apt. I would like to have something more or less like service apt. 1 bed room will be fine.

Sleepy :?

sspradley, seems your question has gone off track Do you have a choice between Pudong and ShanghaiMart which is way west? There are good international schools in both locations, so I think it will be hard to make a decision until you see both places properly. ShanghaiMart is near to where I live in Hong Qiao, just a bit closer to town. I think its a good area, but you will get bigger houses and gardens in Pudong and it is well laid out, etc. I personally would prefer Hong Qiao but friends I have in Pudong like it there, so you get used to wherever you are. Maybe your budget will come into the decision as a lot of the bigger places in Hong Qiao are quite expensive, like USD5,000/month and up.

Fenno,

I think my budget is a little above the amount you mentioned close to 7K USD. I am really curious if there are reasonable villas in the Puxi area that are "walking distance" to good schools.

For 7K USD you can pretty much live anywhere you like.....I wouldn't worry.

Sorry sspradley, haven't been around for a couple of days. I think you can, but if all depends on the school. Has that been chosen as yet? If it will be the American School, then I don't think so, but I will check with friends if this is the case. Seems school buses are the go anyway.
