Look for Uyghur/Xinjiang restaurants, quite a lot of them serve halal food. And for quick/cheap lunches, 'Lanzhou lamian (兰州拉面)' restaurants serve beef noodles and are Muslim owned as well.

Yershari Xinjiang Food 那里夏丽
106 Nandan East Road, near Tianyaoqiao Road, Xuhui District
Tel: 64686079

One of my favorite restaurants in Shanghai, let alone a Xinjiang one. It can get really crowded, especially on weekends, so reservations are recommended. Nice, clean, well-lit place. I don't think the staff speaks much English (if at all), but the menu has English translations and all the dishes have pictures. 30-50rmb per person, make sure you get the biggest lambsticks they have. The noodles are really long and hard to cut, but just tell the waiter to cut them for you. Great food, great value.

Another Xinjiang restaurant I like is on Yishan Road and Xuhong Road, also in Xuhui District. I forget what it's called, but you can't miss the guy with the lambsticks outside. It's on the west side of the Yishan Road.

Donkykong, maybe this is the one? Xin Jiang Feng Wei Restaurant

280 Yishan Rd. 6468-9198 (near XuJiaHui). Went there recently, good food, excellent black beer called Sinkling(?). Been trying to find it for sale in stores but haven't yet.

Also check on www.zabihah.com for a list of muslim (Halal) restaurants worldwide, including many cities in China. It lists 10 in Shanghai, several with user reviews. If you find any that are not on here, feel free to send the suggestions to the webmaster.

I too am looking, but primarily for Pakistani (not Indian) restaurants.

There is another good Xinjiang restaurant near Zhongshan Park. Basically you walk out of starbucks exit 7 of the subway and take a left walking down HuiChuan road. You pass 2 Family Marts (yes they are within 100 meters of each other haha) and when you come to a light, you will see the grilled kebabs on your left hand side.

It is a little pricy for such a small place... 15 rmb for chao mian pian is steep anywhere... and you don't get a lot of meat. The kebabs and the lamb baozi are great though and only 2rmb.
