My water bill is over 200 RMB. Is this normal?

Postby Guru Pitka » Thu Feb 24, 2011 2:21 pm

The bill states it is for the month of January. Seems a little excessive to me. I shower twice a day, wash clothes and use a lot of water to keep my place clean, but this still appears abnormal. What does everyone else pay per month?

Between 6 and 10 RMB per month on average.

Someone is stealing your water.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

I don't think I pay more than 50 RMB, probably less. But I only shower once a week :D

The average water use per person per day is 150-250 litres per day so that would give 6 cubic meters per month. The water tariff in Shanghai is about RMB 2.7 per cubic meter. So you should be paying about RMB 16 per person per month. Not sure if there is a minimum charge.

Are you sure the bill is only for one month? I usually get my water bill, like every other month. Still, if you've been paying the previous months, 200rmb is quite high and not normal at all. You might want to check the water meter.

very, very high. You either have a leak or someone is stealing. Mine always hover at around 15-20 rmb.

Go and check at the water company, I had relatively high electricity bills, and it turned out that something went wrong. They are cut in 3 now, so I'm quite happy that I went to complain at their office :-)
The final trial, please make this work...

You might also have a leak somewhere.. most common are toilet basins that don't close all the way after flush and just keep running water.
If you need a decent v-p-en, pm me for one that works well.

The highest bill for my one-bed apartment, showering, cooking and washing (machine on maybe every third day) was 25rmb.

The most outrageous bill I've ever gotten was 85... But that was between several people and washing clothes more than needed.

Good call on the running toilet Mike, that's probably the culprit.

200 rmb is something like using 250 cubic meters of water, I think.

So if drawing a bath is around 1 cubic meter of water, I suppose drawing 2 baths everyday + regular use would be around 200rmb....interesting.

Seems very high. My bill is usually 15-20 rmb a month. Is the unlicensed bathhouse your neighbor is running stealing your water? ;)

Not many people have baths that size though. 100 litres is more standard.

You know what I forgot about the volume displacement of a human, so at .5 or.4 cubic liters, 2x a day for a month the bill should still come well below 200.

^^ minus your body mass. If you weigh 300lb even the biggest tub would only require less than a quarter of its volume to submerge you.

If you're bored enough then google bathtubs. The capacity is often shown and seems to be in the region of 100 - 190 litres for standard stuff.

300lb = 136 kg ~130 liters.

In nutshell, if you are 1 people - it's mostly impossible spend 74m3 per month. So, check you toilet.

No bath, just a shower. No friends, just a dude. I do a load of laundry every other day (maybe more than average).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. My toilet is definitely funky, but I am pretty sure no leak as I recently had it renovated (and never hear it running when it's not flushed).

The bill could be for more than one month. I can't find a receipt for previous months (I always document my payments), so this is probably the cause. But the bill says 'January' (in Chinese) clear as day and there isn't any reference indicating that this is an accumulated amount from prior months (had a Chinese friend confirm it, too). I'm going to go and yell at someone in broken Chinese tomorrow and see what the issue is.

It so happens that just today I collated 4 years' worth of water bills. I kid you not. Bills came every two months. Some of them as low as 12 rmb. Some as high as 30 or 40, but very few. Mostly in the high teens. One person living in the house most of the time.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.
