I just wonder how would your wife (assume there is one) feels about it?

I suspect that he has already discussed this with his spouse. The idea is based on the concept of live-in exchange students.

However, he's simply trying to "kill two birds w/ the one stone". But, potential applicants ought to understand what this means: she will have limited or very limited freedom, and likely not able to conduct any dalliance with her own bf inside the home. Generally, it might be suitable for a short-term gig of 3-4 months or so, possibly more, until the woman gets on her feet. If she has a regular bf, the affair will have to be conducted outside the home. I am sure that the parents would try and steer clear of women who are lushes, or whose sexual mores are a bit too liberal for the parents' views.

Goos luck finding someone.
You might want to put an ad up at one of the language schools. Sounds like a good deal for a student studing mandarin.
You probably need to have a proper agreement though about exactly what is covered (ie will you provide meals) and exactly what you expect of your guest otherwise may run into some issues.
I am not sure if there is any international homestay programmes in shanghai that you could sign up for?

I'd be interested to hear from anyone on either side of the tourboarding equation.
It sounds like it could be a nice option for the budget challenged traveler/student. But it seems like it could lead to awkward situations.
