Id try posting on the lonely planet thorn tree

http://www.lonelyplanet.com

Its also a good source for finding out the current situation.

You are obviously asking about some basic infor on Nepal (rail links where there arent any/ visa info) so.... maybe you havent heard but theres some major shite going on over there: bombings, kidnappings, bieseged capital, blockaded roads, dire need of humanitarian supplies, strikes galore).
That being said, ID BE DOWN FOR A NEPAL TRIP. Seriously. Let me know.

again its not as serious as made out in the papers
**** journalists,same every where
right from the nepal ,chinese border, your bus,(as rightly said there are no trains) has a chance of being stopped and the maoists will take money from you, depending ion your nationality, the british and americans pay the most
.In the mountaintrecks and river rafting they will give you a receipt, because there are bandits masquerading as moists, and as all good maoists they want to be fair.
yes sometimes kathmandu is blocked off and there are strikes, but most people stay in the thamel distict of kathmandu,so don,t worry you can still get your cappacino,s and pizzas, till 11pm most nights
.normally you can just get your visa on the border, its been about 6 months since i was there, but i think its 30 dollars,
lots of places to change money in kathmandu
Freak street used to be the place to stay in the hippie days,a lot cheaper than thamel if you are ona tight tight budget, but the **** the nepali government is trying to screwa all the tourist by designating that area a unesco site,so more cash to cop up,
get high into the mountains for the real nepal, the touts in katnmandu is like india now,not so bad but still annoying
i might have a few hotels names i can pass on

namaste
