Postby bougie » Mon Oct 01, 2007 8:45 am

After three yrs, my 19 inch chinese computer flat screen is turning yellow and i'm pretty sure it ain't just in my head :)

Looking at philips (only 1 yr warranty), samsung, etc. Not aure what to buy but obviously want to go bigger and better.

Would also be playing the ps2 on it. Any advise ?

they're all on sale starting today.
I generally find the price/quality ratio for most local brands to be unacceptable. To lend creedance to that, all my local friends that have recently bought TV's have bought Korean/Japanese brands even though 50% of the TV's in the stores are local brands.
BUT, I ended up with a Lenovo monitor, I had to sacrfice maximum resolution for cost, but it was worth it, no problems for the first year. The hardest part may be finding a cheap monitor that has the right connectors on it for ps2.

If I was buying a new monitor today, I'd be considering a 1980x1020 screen with an HDMI connector. THen upgrade your PC's dvd player to an HD one, upgrade your video card to one with an HDMI connector, then u can download HD DVD movies and see the full resolution, or output them to your highend plasma/lcd TV, which better have an HDMI connector too. An RGB/14 pin d-sub connection won't pass a full HD signal.

The only warrenty that matters is the part that says they will replace the monitor once 3, 5, or 7 LCD's go bad, if you're getting an established foreign brand.

Make sure the LCD speed is less than 7ms so make sure you won't see trails when playing games or watching movies, unless your eyes are crap, then 12ms may be OK. :)

^ That's useful advice. In addition to that...

There are very few factories producing LCDs here. All local players just assemble but dont manufacture LCDs. This being said, I'd stick with either Samsung or LG-Philips who have do the coast to coast job of getting a proper LCD done.

I bought a 19" from Samsung, widescreen (1900x1400) for some 1900kuai some time ago and the price is about the same today. I paid more because I bought at Best Buy, and you know what, I'd do it again just because I want to be sure if anything goes wrong I will 1)find them and 2)they will honor the warranty

I got myself The Samsung 226BW

22" Inch Widescreen (16:10) running on 1650X1050 with VGA and Dualink DVI Port.

Colors are really nice and respons time for movies and games is also great ( 2ms with overdrive)
Altogether very satisfied with it for about 2500 RMB

Excellent info Dazzz. Seems this might be just up my alley.

Thanks for useful info CH and HC. I was also looking at LG-Philips fairly strongly, was also considering lenovo.

One thing to consider :

If you want to plug in a console/dvdplayer later you might consider buying a monitor with HDMI /Composite ...

You will have to shell out some more money for it , but at least you keep your option open for the future :)

1) it's a holiday week
2) the end of the year is when next year's models start coming out, so they have to get rid of any 2006/2007 models.
~3) moreso for TV's, but with 1080p content starting to emerge at reasoonable prices, they really have to move the non-1080p capable models. These are not necessarily bad models for future HDdvd viewing, it depend how good the software is inside the TV. Pioneer is still selling 1024x768 resolution models for over 20k (TV's) because they do such a good job of upscaling dvd's and downscaling hddvd's.

What's all the talk about HD DVD's???^^ They died a couple years ago. Or did some Chinese company get the patent from Microsoft or Toshiba???

Anyway, as far as monitors go, I'd stay away from Dell or Phillips and any Chinese brand except for Lenovo.
