Nightlife for the older crowd

Postby ptrmn » Thu Apr 26, 2007 7:32 am

Where are some of the best places for the older crowd to hang at. 30 - 40 range. I am a newbie to Shanghai and hanging out at bars like these really doesn’t interest me. Are there any decent bars here?

(Quotes)

“A lot of people love themselves there, like early 20 year olds who wanna be movers + shakers”
“THE place to go if u r into showing up...posing ...seeing the same people most of the times”
“full of kids”
“is strictly mid-20s eurotrash”
“making use of the 150 rmb all you can drink offer”
(My favorite!!) “25 year old wankers with bizarre shaving habits”

really depends on what you like... if you like watching sports a bar like o malleys or big bamboo would surely be of interest for you
if you're into live music my two favourite places are Cotton Club and JZ
catch up with some people from one here they can show you around and then decide for yourself what's best.

agree with sir fiddler, really depends on your idea of "hanging out". Lounge style fouc? Venue focus? Drink focus?

Trader Vics has a nice bar with good drinks and music that is more suited to an older crowd. CJW on top of Shanghai Center is also a bit older. the bar atop the Four Seasons as well. All have music and have older patrons.

Cotton CLub and JZ as mentioned are a little more down to earth venues for a more mellow "hanging out" evening, also with music.

I guess the best way to put it would be atmosphere. I do like live bands, but older stuff, 80s & 90s rock, Blues and a little R& B. Sports bars are OK. I have been to Malone’s and I do like that bar. I’m just looking for more variety. I don’t mind high end bars as long it’s not stuffy and the people are real. I’m just not into Trance or big dance clubs. Chasing around little 22 years olds. that gets old after a while. Just looking for some places that are fun to hang out at.

A bit stuffy due to the hotel crowd....but a great Jazz Trio at The Ritz.

Spot Bar between Mint and Malone's on Tongren Lu. Bonus points for having a outdoor deck. Live Music on Saturday's...average at best....but an older more European crowd.

Senses....Ok food, quiet loungs atmoshpere.
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.....Dave Barry

based on the fact you like Malones, I'd second the suggestion of The Spot- just a few metres north on Tongren Lu, but much better IMO. When you've got The Spot on your left, turn right up Nandang Lu to find Big Bamboo, again, much the same as Malones with live music, good beer, pool tables, and guys well over 25.
