Well, I understand the frustation of dining out when you are seated next to chain smoker... definetely ruin the whole dining experience.
Most western restaurant in Shanghai however divide their area into smoking and non-smoking area, just like mine, Sydney Restaurant. The good news for all pro-non-smoking and family: Our Saturday and Sunday brunches are SMOKE FREE!

Good on ya mate, didn't lose me. Two ticks.

China has the most smokers in the world, but are way behind other countries in realizing that second hand smoke actually kills.
Hopefully, they will catch up soon, and save a few (many), innocent lives.

Saizeriya (萨莉亚)in basement of 555 W Nanjing Lu has a fairly large non-smoking section but that section is closed from time to time when the restaurant has few customers.

All the restaurants in Shanghai Centre alongside the Portman Hotel are non smoking inside with a few smoking tables outside.

Amokka on Anfu has a sign up that it is non-smoking until 8 pm when it re-opens on Feb 20th.
La Strada was already non-smoking; I often saw people out on the pavement for their fix.

Thats a good post.
It will help all the visitors to visit only those hotels which are mentioned in this post to ignore the smoking problem.

I heard because of the Expo the government is now imposing a non smoking policy for all restaurants....however there isn't anyone enforcing this (i.e. I saw a guy smoking right in front of a nonsmoking sign at a restaurant, pointed it out to the waitress and she shrugged and said "no one to enforce"). BUT, judging from this extensive list sounds like we're on our way to a relatively smoke free dining experience! Thanks for all the input!

not sure if this one has been added, but Just Grapes on Anfu is non-smoking. Also, apparently Windows Scoreboard (the one at jing'an) is non-smoking..? probablly due to that new non-smoking expo law. yay!

Last time I was there it looked like Windows was non-smoking on one side and smoking on the other, not the whole bar. Bars are allowed to have smokers by the way. So are restaurants, they only need to allocate part of the area for non-smokers.

I would be interested to know what the criteria are for a restaurant to be classified as eco-friendly?

As of May 1st, technically, ALL bars have to be ZERO smoking.

Like China though, what the law says, and what the cops know/enforce, are two different things.

Slowly but surely more and more restaurants are introducing a no smoking ban. Whether this is down to any kind of enforcement of the 'law' or off their own backs I don't know. What I do know is that it's pissing me off. :-(

12 hours later I feel like crap, after sitting in a smoke filled club last night with a groups of friends.
One drink + one tea and now a semi hanghover, coughing all morning (I've not been outside yet) and that's it! no more funk filled haze fest joints of a lounge, bar or restaurant.

Any places that enforce the non-smoking laws are the only ones I'm interested in. Having a smoking side of the room and non-smoking side does not count that is as effective as having one side of a plane smoking and the other side non-smoking.

Enter on the thread any that make smokers sit outside, have enclosed smoking rooms, or total non- smoking bars and restaurants....

All us smokers need is a small smoking room with an opened door or window, or an ashtray out side...makes note to self - bring nose plugs to bars now to cover up body odour and feet smells.

what they need is a couple of these at the back somewhere- we had these in engineering offices in Holland on the production floors. The non-smokers couldn't smell a thing.

The problem with folks going just outside the door is that non-smokers have to fight their way past the smokers to get in even...

In fact it would be good if the tobacco companies installed these where requested at their cost.

Restaurants and clubs would use them if they didn't have to pay.
