Ok to go to Chengdu?

Postby supernena » Fri Mar 28, 2008 1:11 pm

Have four days off in April and am thinking about going to Chengdu but some people have told me that it might not be a good time because of recent problems in surrounding areas. What do you think? I have been in China for a year but have not had time to do any real traveling and would like to know the opinions of those who have.

Thanks

I was there on Tuesday and didn't see any of the things the NYTimes are reporting. Granted, I was only there for about 24 hours but I did a lot of walking around the center of town. I thought Chengdu was great. The people are very friendly. And there are lots of very pleasant pedestrian malls. If you are looking for a place to stay, let me know. I have a friend who has an inn there and I can send you the contact info.

Also do not believe everything you read. I remember being in Devon in the UK during the big foot and mouth outbreak. I was the only person staying in a particular hotel and a reporter for USA Today interviewed me. She kept asking me questions about how brave I was for risking being on holiday during the huge risk to my health of foot and mouth. I tried to explain many times that she was thinking of "mad cow" disease but alas....

how come the NYTimes doesn't report unsubstantiated rumours from Iraqis on the street?

Where I come from, people who burn down police stations aren't "prοtesters" they're rioters, or- oh what the hell- terrorists.

"The police initially did not stop them. But when prοtesters burned a police station, soldiers with machine guns fired into crowds, killing at least 13 t¡betans, the student said. He said several Chinese soldiers had been killed. "

Bad bad Chinese soldiers, opening up on poor peaceful t¡betans just because they kill a few soldiers.

Am I getting Stockholm Syndrome or is the reporting on t¡bet more lopsided than Heather Mills in the shower?

Paul McCartney's money-grubbing one legged ex wife. She is about as popular as a fart in an elevator.

And yet so many western media are suggesting the police / army are to be condemned for being too forceful against the rioters. Is it just me or would an indication of excessive force have been if the police / army fired into the crowds BEFORE the rioters did anything?

My theory is that a bunch of journalists were trying to get into Lhasa but had to stay in Chengdu until Lhasa re-opened. In the meantime there was pressure to file a story so rather than say that they didn't have a story because they couldn't get to t¡bet, they pretended there was a story where they were. Unfortunately they missed the real story which is the amount of cocaine, pot and ecstasy in Chengdu nightclubs.

I think some of those buddhist monks have got their hands on some of that ecstasy!
