Organic beef in Shanghai?

Postby GF999 » Tue Jan 10, 2012 6:39 pm

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone knew where i can buy organic beef in Shanghai? I have checked out the various organic supermarkets/online delivery services, all of them only sell organic veggies, pork and chicken. But no beef. I went to city super and it was the same, the closest thing they had was Australian grass fed beef. How come you can find organic everything BUT beef here, is there no demand for it? Or are these special import problems? i'm no expert but i imagine if they can import grass fed beef from australia they can also import organic, plus the extra cost for certification?

Thanks!

Both fields and city super sell organic chicken and pork. But no one seems to sell beef... Or is grass fed beef the same as organic beef? Is there no market for organic beef here?

No.

"It’s important to remember that grassfed is not the same as organic. Natural food stores often sell organic beef and dairy products that are hormone- and antibiotic- free."

"Just as organic does not mean grass-fed, grass-fed does not mean organic. Pastured animals sometimes graze on land that has been treated with synthetic fertilizers and even doused with herbicides. Unless the meat label specifically says it is both grassfed and organic, it isn’t."

Beef is an uncommon commodity in China. I am working on changing that.

What are you working on?

Been in negotiations in Beijing with my partner and the powers that be
for permission to rent a large plot of land to raise cattle on.

The beef you produce couldn't be classified as organic for many years to come though, right? From memory, it takes at least five years in the UK for land to be in a state where anything produced on it could qualify as organic.

that's very interesting...is your plan to raise "organic" or "grass fed" beef? You think there's a large enough market to recuperate your investment?

Truth is that it has been a battle from every angle as we would be bringing in
breeding stock that is already certified as organic and grass fed, so as to sooth
the powers that be. Very expensive proposition so far, fruitless to date.
1.3 billion mouths to feed, profitable, no. But for a good cut of beef here....

tihzo - check out 'omnivore's dilemma' or 'eating animals'. organic is a subjective label, making it meaningless sometimes. but once you actually understand factory farming - you'll adjust your habits. if the practices are disgusting in the US (where those authors do their research), you could only imagine what's on our plates over here.

Yasmine's - butcher shop in jinqiao and on xiangyang. the guy was saying to check out their uraguay beef - no hormones, no antibiotics, and grass fed (but not certified organic).

Try the guys from Yasmine's Butchery. They have a huge range of imported chicken, pork, beef and lamb.
The Shop in Puxi is on Xiang Yang bei Lu 93, close to changle lu or in Pudong on Biyun Lu 178, close baihua lu. They also make cold cuts and sausages by themself

I went there to visit the irish butcher ( as reported here on a different thread a few months ago )

actually he is a kiwi ( NZ )

the beef was beautiful, the lamb was luscious, the pate perfect

overall a very pleasant change from the crap you normally get here. Yasimes is a place not to missed. Price wise its about the same as we pay back home.

The problem is that you cannot bring Beef from the Americas since the mad cow scare
some years back, you cannot get Kobe beef (this may have changed recently) and Australian
beef, while still beef, really is average, and missing something.

What is wrong with Aussie Beef?? You must be getting the shitty cuts if you think there is something "missing" with it.

Really, cannot get Kobe beef?? There is a steak house about 10 minutes walk from my apartment compound which offers Kobe beef.

China is doing what it can to protect its own industry.

As I said before, its a stretch to believe any Chinese certification for anything, especially if there is money involved
