Chinese girls have asked me out many times, and I always do the gentlemanly thing and offer to pay (I'm American). Perhaps the OP is from a poverty-stricken country where culture and etiquette are a bit different?

In a handful of cases, if the girl who asked me out is in her late 20s or early 30s and has a good job, she will insist on paying. However, this is the exception rather than the rule.

Dating 101 here: take the girl to an interesting, yet inexpensive place here to see her reaction IF you are worried about whether she's in it for the meal. This is, if you're after a relationship and not just out to wine and dine a 'sex object.' I wouldn't equate the type of girl who only sticks around for fancy dinners with a prostitute, but I would definitely be out hunting in the clubs and buying a few drinks if I were after that type of play.

I personally don't take out that many 'local' girls, but the ones I do are mid-to-late 20s, all professionals and/or entrepreneurs that are relatively well-off. I don't date them for their money, but their bank account is at least some reflection of ambition and intelligence - essentials to me. They tend to focus on personality and the conversation more than whether the meal costs three or four digits. My last date was great and I'm sure there will be more, even though she picked me up (she drove) from my place and our tabs were even by the end of the evening (we went to more than one place).

Girls: Pay for the second or third date, or at least insist. Insist on the second one, and if he puts up a good fight and ends up paying, there's your chance to offer in advance to pay for the third IF you're interested. it depends on which western culture you're from.

i'm australian and most of the time i will split the bill 50/50 (until you're married or defacto). unless the guy has a bill gates-sized bank account, then i will insist on paying my own way. i don't want any guy using the fact that i don't pay my share as an argument against me later on.

sometimes for the first date the guy might shout... but that definitely should not be the case if the girl asked HIM out. just common courtesy.

but i don't think there would be very many modern western girls who would go on dates just EXPECTING to be paid for.

Guys/gals, I am 2 weeks from leaving for shanghai and my shanghainese friends here have been educating me about paying on dates in Shanghai since a month ago. I know this goes against for us who are so used to going dutch, but in SH, even if it's juz for normal friends, guys are bound to pay, let alone for gals that you wanna bring to the bed. Try to visit one of the local blogs like shanghaining.com and you'll see that guys pay for most of the expenses. Save up for the dates.

you do have to take into acount cultural differences. for many reasons which i don't really understand, shanghai women seem to want to be paid for by men all the time, and that's that. whereas, women from western cultures (usually) don't mind paying their own way.

in keeping with the "women's rights" i like to think i'm entitled to, i'm happy with paying half of the bill.

tim, i feel sorry for guys like you who are expected to pay for women who are earning a decent income. it just doesn't seem right. chivalry does not need to be that extreme in this day and age.

here in china as i've noted the guy always has to pay for face sake.. even if both are earning money or even if the woman is earning more it doesn't matter. that's why i always get weird looks when i foot the bill with my partner, so often he just pays with our money to avoid the weird looks... i spoke to a few ppl (chinese guys) who were complaining about the same thing. they said it can get pretty hard, pressure wise, and sometimes they wish the woman would pay.

i had another case: went out clubbing with a female chinese friend. We met a bunch of fun aussies and went out together.. when it came to buying drinks or even entry, she latched onto a male friend and somehow swindled him into paying entry (100RMB), buying drinks AND accompanying her home in the taxi in order for him to pay the taxi ride home. Now, i was pretty surprised. I paid my own entry, drinks and taxi home and asked her whether by asking him to accompany her home, that hm would there be any expectations... plus she hardly knows the person but she said that is normal in china and a guy should always accompany a woman home. I'm sorry but i would much rather pay my own way than to go somewhere with some random for the sake of what 20RMB taxi fare!!!
