Popular San Francisco Pizzeria Amici’s
Schedules January Opening In Shanghai

SAN MATEO, California -- Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria (http://www.amicis.com), the critically acclaimed San Francisco Bay Area restaurant, will open in Shanghai in January, company co-founder and President Peter Cooperstein announced today.
The first “Ello Amici’s” is located on Xiang Yang Road in the popular
HuaiHai Road shopping district of Shanghai.

The China opening is the product of collaboration between Cooperstein, partner Mike Forter and the Lo Family of Shanghai. Menlo Park resident Sophie Lo is a Bay Area businesswoman and her brother, Jimmy Lo, is a real estate developer in China.
"When Mike Forter and I founded our first Amici's East Coast Pizzeria in 1987, we were excited to introduce the Bay Area to the style and quality of our food and to our service-oriented operation,” Cooperstein said. “Today we are equally energized to realize an even a greater opportunity in China!"
Renowned for pizza prepared in open flame, 700 degree ovens, Ello Amici’s will offer Chinese patrons a similar menu to that available to Amici’s diners in the
Bay Area.

Amici’s began serving an east coast-style thin crust pizza in a smart and casual atmosphere in December of 1987 and operates 12 sites from San Jose to Vacaville, including two popular San Francisco locations, on Lombard Street and on King Street, across from AT&T Park. The company is annually ranked as one of the most successful independently-owned pizza businesses in the United States.
"Our goal is to open several locations in Shanghai and then expand into Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau and other areas in China,” Cooperstein said.

The popular eatery has also scheduled its initial Southern California site, in
La Jolla (Northern San Diego County) for the spring of 2012. Additionally, Amici’s pizzas are now served at San Jose Sharks National Hockey League games in the HP Pavilion.

I thought about this announcement later, and wondered what the price would be. If correct, as you would expect, a typical Shanghai price. There are already pizzerias in SH charging around this price, aren't there? You have to ask yourself if this company has a comparable position in the US. Don't forget who the major partner is, and local connection

146RMB for a pizza IS premium pricing. Of course this exists already...but is it necessary?

$23 for a pizza...whoa

SBARROS if run right, with their taste and pricing structure, in the right location in Shanghai will give all the pizza places a run for their money....

Sbarro opened in Jinqiao and closed less than 6 months later. The food was absolute garbage.

I thought I read something about Sbarro going out of business a little while back so I checked wikipedia and I was wrong. They are currently in bankruptcy protection. Been there since April.

Best of luck to Amici's though. I look forward to checking them out.

What is the relationship of SBarro to Amici's?

@Juan_Tamad: don't you think that in this case, just providing a link is good enough? Not like we can examine their menu online and order delivery in SH, right?

No relationship......just saying Shanghai does not need another "overpriced" pizza.
What the city needs is a decent tasting pizza thats easy on the wallet

When I was in Brooklyn last month the trendy pizza place I went to were selling pies for over 50usd a piece; and there was a line outside. There was also a velvet rope by the door. Pizza was sublime. I did not mind paying the premium one bit, as pizza is already something I rarely eat.

That's expensive for a pie. I assume the pizzas were much cheaper.

Pal, I have just done a rough count of the pizza joints/italian restaurants in this town--they run the gamut from down market independents, local chains, MNC chains, to top end (price unknown) independents--you're looking at around 42. (Whoa--need to confirm this, we ought to worry if the answer here really IS 42!...) There's surely a price here to suit every budget.

I ate at the shanghai ello amici's on january 26th, 2012 and it's just as good as the one in mountain view, ca.. The pizzas are about two dollars less then the norcal restaurants. A medium pizza is $18 and a large $20. A good value because the food, the environment, and service is great. Shanghai now has a great pizza. Worth the visit even after a two hour bus trip.
