pregnant in Shanghai? advice?

Postby AlliX » Tue Sep 20, 2005 4:23 pm

Hey there, I was hoping some people who have been pregnant in Shanghai can give me some advise, like what not to eat, what to beware of, good foods / bad foods, etc.

Also, where to give birth? I've heard different suggestions, from here in Shanghai to the Matilda Hospital in Hong Kong. I definetely want as Western style as possible, English spoken, Western doctors and medicine, etc, which is why I am thinking of Hong Kong but I also want to be near my own home in Shanghai.

Any suggestion? I would really appreciate it!!!

My own preference would be Shanghai United Family Hospital. I had my care at Beijing UFH and two of the key figures from there are now in Shanghai. It is a totally English speaking hospital and practises real western Family centered care.
BUT--research it your self, call the hospitals and ask for a tour, no medical visit just a look around-no obligation tour and judge for yourself. Call Dr Moreton or Midwife Mk Chin, they are both very obliging.

As a mother of 2 young daughters and an OB/GYN physician, I have a few suggestions when you shop around for your pregnancy care:

1. You want to make sure the physician(s) who do the prenatal care will also do your delivery and postpartum care. Mistakes happen when there is miscommunication between different personals.

2. If your prenatal care is provided by a midwife and you want to make sure there is a good emergency back-up system. Questions like: who is going to perform the c-section if needed (midwife does not do any procedures), Would that be a local physician who you never seen? Who will be the qualified consultants when there is maternal medical emergency?

2. Is there a well qualified neonatologist at the time of birth for some unexpected new born emergency situations?

3. Who is baby's pediatrician? Is he coming tothe hospital to see the baby after the birth?

There are more...

I can be reached at Worldlink Birthing Center if you would like to talk more. I started practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Shanghai 3 months ago. Before I joined Worldlink, I was a faculty member in a medical school in New Jersey. My team at worldlink would be very happy to provide tours introducing our service and physicians. We are confident in providing high standard care in OB/GYN. We have 3 full-time Obstetricians providing 24 hour/7days coverage for the complete prenatal, labor&delivery and postpartum care.
