Q: "Mu" in real estate metric size

Postby IAmNotYao » Fri Aug 01, 2008 8:55 pm

Does anyone know how much a "mu" is equivalent to square meter or square foot? I've never heard of a "mu" in real estate metric prior to coming to China as opposed to, say, an acre of land. Thanks...

@emerson.....know the meaning of METRIC?

1 mu is approx 666 m2, so there are about 15 mu in 1 hectare.

To be clear: acre is NOT metric (like most American units of measurement, no idea how you can guys can see any logic in your system).

Mu is (as far as i know) not used in Chinese real estate for housing surfaces, only for land surfaces (only used with 2 feet on ground floor level).

Honest mistake.

I don't think we pretend that its logical or better than metric, but it is the system we know and its works fine for 99% of Americans. In fact, the more the Europeans and Canadians moan about unwillingness to be more logical, the more likely we are to stay with the present system.

Of course, the science crowd in the US are big proponents of converting to metric, but their last big push in the 1970's crashed and burned--probably because that same 99% of Americans cannot do the math required to appreciate the simplicity of the metric system.

But, even if Americans could do the math, the metric system would still fail to take hold for the simple reason that its terminology can never hope to evoke the same imagery as the terms of the present system...

Well, of course it's just a matter of being used to a certain system. As long as you stay in 1 system it's fine. Troubles just pop up when you start converting between systems, that's all.

Very true. But I'm pretty sure those in the know have no doubts which type of ounce they are trying to buy.
