Postby shanghaiedRJ » Fri Aug 21, 2009 4:48 pm

hi all!
i am pretty new to shanghai but was wondering what the rave scene was like.
so far i have not seen much going on, but i may not be looking in the right places.
and whats up with so many nigerians selling fake (and expensive) ecstasy in shanghai..... uh, not that i know first hand, but, just saying....
any suggestions?

The Void crew put on a party in a warehouse at the start of the summer, and they're making some noises about doing another one.

There was something called the Electrograss festival on more recently, and again there's talk of another one.

There were a bunch of people putting on Tourist parties about 2 years ago- but I don't know who they were or what happened to them.

Everything pops up on shanghaiist.com or smartshanghai.com anyway, so keep an eye on there.

Maybe try Xu Jia Hui Park after sunset. Lots of people dancing and getting crazy.

And when I say crazy, I mean ballroom dancing. Might be a trip if you take the head shake pills...

www.void-shanghai.com for all your proper electronic dancing needs.

We have a party this Saturday at Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Lu with Underground Resistance from Detroit. Will be good one.

not aware of any real trance/rave joints.
local chinese are more into getting table service, sitting on their ***, drinking chivaz w/ greentea, and play their dice game. no many actually dance at all.

I heard about the greentea and whisky/cognac mixed never tried it myself. Time to time chilling playing dice games fun, but definitely gotta get off my ass and on to the dance floor.

The rave / dance (the act of dancing, not the music genre) scene left China around five years ago. If Taiwan is anything to go by, though, it will be back.

Actually I am a bit skeptic of this website. Is it safe to buy tickets from 'this' website? I am new in Shanghai and don't have much experience in online ticketing.

I'm hearing from more than one person that M2 is short of space inside. If this is true, it can result in cancellation of my plan to be there for Armin van Buuren.

Although it would be great to see AVB spin it up, it will be a complete dissapointment if you intend to dance away with like minded down-to-earth people. M2 will provide the complete opposite.

I saw AVB a few years back at a White Party in Melbourne with 15,000 people and enough dancing space for everyone. Going to M2 to see him would be enough to make me cry. Shame his manager and those behind the choice of venue can't think of the fans but only the $$ but then I guess AVB's support fan base would be tiny in China.

Most at M2 would have no idea who he is :(

i saw deadmau5 at M2. The place isn't small but the club makes most of its money from locals renting tables. So whenever demand is high enough, they just complete pack out all available space (including the dancefloor) with tables.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that the floor was more crowded and less friendly than the subway at 9:00am. Except you know, with more lit cigarettes in your face.

Dancing was absolutely impossible.

Just went to AVB at M2 yesterday. Music was great, of course. Armin did a good 4-hr gig!!!
But, gosh, so many tables were closely arranged right next to the already-small dance floor. local rich chinese mofos came with bodyguards and call girls. all of them looked utterly bored. quite many of them passed out after bottles of the infamous chivas w/ greentea. Only in china, u can see such 'entertaining' scenes. the clubs' only concern is making money rather than nurturing local EDM culture...

@AvB on 28th Nov:

One girl came to me and said 'Who is this guy'?

Anyways, the space was so less that I too wished I had booked a table to least have some place all for myself for dancing. A bit of space was created after almost an hour into AvB when the Chinese who didn't understand him started to leave. There was a technical glitch also around half an hour into his set but I don't blam AvB for that.

Music was superb, sound system wasn't too bad either.

I wonder where I can get the video Glenn Morrison was making back there.

This one was taken right after a small fight broke out behind me.
