Other expats have expressed concern about this too but I think they're being pedantic. In some ways it's better they hold it. I don't then ever have to worry where it is. If there's an inspection, I won't have to wonder if I left it at home (it's at home right now!).
The only reason I asked them for it was because I needed it for something or other.
Gotta agree with that.
Sure, it's cool, has your picture in it, can make a great souvenir and conversation starter, but as far as being crucial to daily survival outside of the workplace it ranks right down there with the hand-over-your-head umbrella.
I would have to say, though, it is equally pedantic for the employer to cry and moan about how it's the end of the world if you don't return it.
It just seems like a control / anti-control thing.
