My buddy called me tonight saying he had 2 tickets to the Stones. We paid $50 (400 RMB) each. They were really $180 (1440 RMB) each, but this lady got us a deal. We didn't sit in our real seats, because they were up real high so we snuck down to 2nd row from the floor in the middle of the hockey arena. This was the first time I saw the Rolling Stones.
REVIEW:
Don't worry. I won;t spoil it for those of you seeing them in Shanghai. I just saw Aerosmith last week too, so I am feeling like one big fuukin rocker right now! I'm living in Spinal Tap. I personally liked Aerosmith better. If you know old Aeorsmith fromt he 70s, the show I saw was geared towards that era. NO SONGS OFF PUMP! There is just something about Aerosmith I love. Their joyful songs with a real positive childlike vibe, but coming from real true bluesey rock. Joe Perry shreds! Even their commercial songs from the 80s and 90s are still excellent songs.
I have seen many great legends of rock, and The Stones were one of the only ones I haven't seen yet. I've seen David Bowie, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Rush, Yes, Metallica, Dio, Grateful Dead about 100 times, John Lee Hooker, even bands liek Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Oingo Boingo, etc. I have been playign guiar since I was 8. Basically what I am saying here is, I understand "The Rock". So I really just went to see The Stones to check them off my list. I didn't expect anything but crappy versions of old played out songs with Keith Richards about to collapse on stage.
WAS I WRONG! The show was 100 times better than I expected. It was fantastic! They played some of the standards, but they did soem old stuff that was just as I hoped to see them. They did this long jam in Midnight Rambler, that made me feel like I was in the late 60s. It was the real fuukin deal man! It was like The Stones frozen in time. That song alone was well worth the ticket! Mick Jagger wen to the front of the stage and just soulfully sang improvised words, while Ron Wood and Keith Richards went into some soft smooth jam. AMAZING!
The entire show had so much soul and feeling I couldn't believe it. They were totally in the zone. The sound system was great and the music was crystal clear. Keith looked great and moved around a lot too. Mick Jagger looked like a fuukin aeorbics instructor. Look at those muscles!
Basically, The Stones still have it! I would have never thought. The show was about 2 hours which I thought was short, and some songs like Jumpin Jack Flash and Satisfaction I could do with out, but for the most part, this was true blues rock pouring from their heart and soul like they just wrote the songs yesterday!
I'll see you at the show in Shanghai April 8.
