Satellite service with a sat-dish or without?

I heard there is some kinda online satellite service where you just need the box and don't need a dish. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two? Does anyone have experience with the non-dish service before?

I have seen one Chinese companies box with IPTV. Their issue is simply not enough uploading bandwidth to share the pics at reasonable quality to all users. Quite burry and unstable speeds. Can take 30 seconds for a channel change from the Cinese provided box. No aftesales service and no program guides.

I run an IPTV service but it isnt cheap neither is it expensive... starting from RMB580pm with over 180 channels. Uploading bandwith to each customer with private fiber lnes.

Our clients are very happy wth this service. IT allows to watch anywhere not just at home. portable satellite TV you might call it.

It really depends on what content you want. Dream TV is cheap enough witha dish costs about 4000rmb installed with 12 month sub on a genuine decoder and card.

There are other cheaper pirated systems that often sometimes work avalable.

Advantages, we offer more content than any other provider on one system. We also offer 24 hour online service to our clients. You can watch anywhere there is an ADSL or wireless connections, worldwide.

Out system has remote recording and TIVO playback systems. You do not need to have ADSL for playback.

We have people who watch at work and at home. Many of our clients also trave for business so they can watch when away on business trips.

You can test the system for free which you cant with a dish install.

Disadvantages, not as clear as a dish setup from DSTV or Truevions but our system is still much clearer than Dream TV quality with a dish, if setup properly.

Hello Wasabichez and others

Firstly, I live in Hefei, which isn't exactly a cosmopolitan place like Shanghai... there is only a small expat community here. I have been in China for 6 months now and have been desperate to get television (especially sport and news) from Australia.

I can now say that I have had experience with the non dish 'satellite service' and have been pleasantly suprised. I asked my Chinese liason at the college I work at here in Hefei about the possiblility of getting a satellite dish to get DreamSat, and the answer flatly was 'no- its illegal in China'. So for the past few months I have been going to the Hilton here in Hefei to watch the rugby and other sports on their televisions (and paying RMB 25-30 a beer for the privilege!).

Last week, here on Shanghai Expat I noticed the thread about Taiwan satellite and contacted Jim, and within a couple of hours, I had downloaded the HAVA player off the website, Jim talked me through the set up of HAVA via Skype and got the service streaming through my computer. Unfortunately here at the college, I have a shared broadband connection and my speeds go up and down depending on how many other users are online. My download speed varied between 70kps and 700 kps later in the evening. The picture coming through varied from very pixelated to pretty good, but not consistent enough. I asked my liason here about upgrading the internet service and again his response was 'impossible....'

Last night, I took my laptop over to a mate's apartment which has its own internet connection and switched on the HAVA to have a look at the service offered by Taiwan Sat service and both me and my mate were pleasantly suprised at how good the picture and streaming was. We watched the Super 14 match between the Force and the Reds and the system didn't miss a beat... At his apartment we were getting around 800-900 kbs last nite at around 6-7pm...

580 RMB per month is quite expensive... but I have been paying RMB 25-30 per beer at the Hilton to watch the games I want... so for me its only 20 beers and its already paid for itself... plus wherever you can get a decent internet connection, you have access to DSTV and all the sports channels which is pretty handy...

My mate here in Hefei (who is actually from South Africa) was hooked within 10-15 minutes and is wanting a system set up by next weekend... I think his wife was even more excited by all the other channels on offer.

So if you have a decent internet connection I would consider the Taiwan Sat service... plus you dont have the dish sticking out attracting attention of the authorities...

Sorry Shine, I dont understand your Benson reference. This thread was started to make comments about non satellite television services in China and that is what I have done. Some people try to be sincere and offer opinions based on their own experiences without having alterior motives. I live in Hefei, Anhui province... its pretty remote without many expat services.. I have been wanting to get decent televison for the past few months and this is the best thing I have come across so far. PM me if you want me to clarify any further.

cheers
