At a petstore or garbage dump, i'd understand.

Not in a grocery store, thats just plain disgusting and words can't even describe the irony of seeing these creatures run around food you are about to injest.

Rats are everywhere!!! You are naive to think otherwise... I know it grossed you out and they must have been some bold Rats for you to actually see them during opening hours but this is normal everywhere in the world.

I guess that also means you do not plan to eat out anymore? I bet most restaurant kitchens are crawling with cockroaches.

Yummy...cockroaches ;)

talking about petstores...saw a cute little black&white piglet for sale in my neighbourhood. Wonder if he'll be bought as a pet or for food :(

I dunno... i know rats are everywhere, but running around crowded aisles in the "fresh market" part of a grocery store?

I hate to imagine what's behind the walls that they're already running around on the floor.

maybe i'm just a wuss, but this isn't normal by my standards.

Cockroaches are the ultimate survivor animal. They way they are built they can survive almost anything nature can throw at them. It takes a lot of pesticide and discipline to get rid of them...

Rats are everywhere in Shanghai. I am sure they are in most wet markets or other Food stores. Heck, I even saw one in City shop a while ago. Usually they are not out and about when many people are around - but they are around.

Pests (not only roaches and rats), are a huge problem in all grocery stores, not only Carrefour, and not only in China. Unless you constantly check areas carefully, and have a good system in place, it is not easy to keep a store 100% pest-free.

@OP - did you see A rat, or ratS??

@OP...what is the deal with that ?

As someone has said above..rats everywhere. Recently saw a news clip showing a rat running around while Obama was briefing on some of his plans at white house.. The rat was seen by millions of people. Lucky one :)

Hmmm, this topic (Rats in Carrefour) was discussed on this board a few months ago - and we concluded that it was perfectly fine for rats and other species to make Carrefour their natural habitat!

I know, China is no exception to this problem.

I know that all of you won't want to read this, but you need to know Reality.

In all major East Coast USA cities there are rats and cockroaches in every building. Even if you tent your building and kill them all, they just move next door for a week and then move back in. The infrastructure and buildings are so old that the rats and cockroaches have been there for hundred's of years.

They are not going anywhere.

This has nothing to do with cleanliness. A hi end restaurant in DC, Backbay, NYC, Chicago cannot keep rats or roaches out of its kitchen. It is a metaphysical impossibility. They all have rat traps, they all spray once a week. It cannot be helped and it has nothing to do with how clean the store or restaurant is. All kitchens have a door that opens to the back of the building, right on to the street, alley, etc. The rats are right there, always.

Someone props open the door, or they sneak into a box of produce and get in.

Shanghai, the same exact thing. The most expensive restaurants will have roaches and rats.

Yep... Zhonghan park.

You all can justify rats to yourself all you want, but i have NEVER seen a rat in a grocery store in the USA.

I'm not saying they don't exist, but it's obviously much less common.

So you saw a rat… big deal. What about what you don’t see? The deli guy who doesn’t wash his hands after taking a piss? The last patron who used the trolley / basket before you… ever wonder about sanitary issues there? Or how about that money in your pretty little princess purse? Bet you it presents more hygiene issues than the rat you are freaking out about

“food you are about to ingest”? are you serious? Makes you sound like some pig bellying up to the ol’ trough. Most people take their food home and wash it before eating…

“obviously much less common” - wow, pretty amazing how you can come to such an all encompassing conclusion based on 1 rat sighting

You probably should go back to your hermetically sealed little bubble… or more realistically, you can acknowledge life as it is outside in the real world and stop making useless comparisons to a country you no longer reside in

So what you’ve seen a rat and won’t shop at Carrefour anymore… once less place for damned dirty apes to paw your family right?

They are in the back in the storeroom. Take a look and look for rat traps. They are behind all grocers in the states and are in the back of the house.

You don't lay a trap for something that does not exist...

RATS and COCKROACHES are SIMPATICO with HUMANS.

Befriend the rats. :D

I was grossed out by the big fat healthy rats running around a very popular resaurant area in an agreable part of SE Asian.
Sometime later, while in a taxi with visitiors from home, I pointed out this area and made comments about the giant rats running about in there.

The Indian taxi driver said..."the food must be good, that is why the rats are there".

It's just a matter of perspective and rat tolerance.

That's real funny!

Back home my cousin worked for 7-Eleven when we were teenagers and he saw tons of rats in their storerooms and shops... and warned us never to get any of those drinks from the dispensers. That much for cleanliness in the developed world!

I am sometimes surprised by what people are surprised about in this city. I think it's glistening gleamy new buildings belies so much of the real earthy reality of the city.

It was far easier to comprehend when I first got here in the early 90's. Gosh, there were rats EVERYWHERE then.....local supermarket, streets, lanes, my home. (very eeeeky experience)

This city is still a HUGE work in progress. I often mention this to people when they arrive and when I meet them six months or so later it is the one comment/warning they tell me that they remember.

Whilst there are regulations on health, safety and hygiene as well as officers the whole system is only just starting. Add to that an element of gov't corruption, lack of funding/resources and generally complacieny about these issues, you end up with what you get......RATS in Carrefour and other supermarkets.

They are several diseases that can be passed on from infected rates by feces and urine on food. So seeing rats in food stores is not a good sigh of good hygine!

Not just rats.
Saw a 1 year old boy riding the trolley in Tescos, and standing amongst the grocerys.
No nappy, and no pants. How do I know it was a boy?.....
Not very nice hygeine.
If he had a little accident, my guess is the food will be returned to the shelf!
