Secondhand watches

Postby buckwild » Mon Oct 22, 2007 3:43 pm

Are there any watchshops in Shanghai offering deals on secondhand watches, like Rolex, Omega and other Swiss brands? I appreciate that fake copies can be picked up cheaply from a street stall, but from a collectors point of view I am looking for something more bonafide.

Pleased to hear if anyone's got somewhere to recommend.

Cheers

old post, but just wanted to tell you that there is a v. nice 2nd hand store that sells only swiss watches. Nanchang rd close to the n/s pedestrian street that ends up in fuxing park. West site of the crossing, north side of the street, close to dragonfly massage. They also have a decent watchmaker, had a couple of my watches serviced there. Happy hunting!

This place has old watches in the glass cabinet, back and to the right, near the jade. Don't remember exactly what they had, but they were expensive.

there is a nice jewellry store on xing le lu close to shaanxi lu (in between crossing of chang le lu and huai hai lu),
comming from shaanxi lu it is on the right side of the road.
the shopkeeper is a nice chinese lady - married to an expat (american - hope i memorized that correct. hehe, she told me he likes the fake stuff, but she has a passion for the real ...)
anyay, she seems to import second hand jewelry stuff incl. watches (i assume from pawn shops).
personally i was always happy with the thing i got there.
bring a translator as shop assistanst do not speak english well and she is not around all the time.

good luck!

and maybe post your experience.
it is hard to find the real thing in shanghai.

for the watches try the Chinese pawn shops... you will see the Chinese character "当" outside the shop. They are everywhere.

There is a Pawn shop across the street from the Nanjing Copy Market. Have not bought anything from there myself so I will not give any guarantees.

there is a chain of 2nd-hand luxury goods called Milan Fang - 米兰坊 - with several outlets around the Changle/HuaiHai Shanxi/Maoming corridors. While they carry mostly ladies bags, I have seen some watches there.

i have not bought any watches in shanghai so far. will have a look in the places other posters have mentioned and let you know if i find anything good. the place i mentioned earlier in nanchang lu is worth a visit, but their selection is quite small.

singapore is a good place for buying secondhand watches. they have many stores around town - more details can be found on google. hong kong has also got some good dealers.

Another bump of this old thread, to see if there is any updated info on good places for vintage/second hand watches in Shanghai - I'm talking real ones, not knock offs. Still the only places I have seen is that shop on Nanchang road and the pawn shop on Nanjing road, but with the rising buying power of the locals and the way they seem to change watches rapidly there's bound to be a market for second hand watches in Shanghai, isn't it? I'd also be interested in places to pick up vintage watches (again, real ones) - I saw someone mentioning a shop in Yu Garden in another post, has anyone been there recently? I'd normally think twice before buying anything as "real" in Yu Garden, but maybe I'm wrong.

I was in Hong Kong recently, and there's a big market for secondhand watches there, with some shops selling only second hand/vintage. From what I heard from one of the dealers, many of their clients are mainlanders who come to Hong Kong to buy/trade. Perhaps that explains why there aren't any more shops here in Shanghai.

Anyway, I'd be pleased to hear from fellow watch lovers.

Majority of foreigners that I've seen/encountered buy knock offs, but if you really want a legit place for some 2nd hand watches/goods you can try Milan, they are across from Westgate Mall, small shop that is next to Rolex on the side street. Another place is directly across the new XTD South building (or North forgot which one), there is a 2nd hand luxury item store there, my wife sold her smaller white 30cm birkin there, got a decent deal, legit, and have seen a few watches, IWC, Hermes, Cartier, not sure about lower end, Rolex, Longines. You will sometimes see the owner there, he drives a white California parked outside, can't miss it.

Fair warning Milan is run by 2 shanghainese ladies, if your old school u'll know what to expect. I believe they have a few other shops around SH also, Pudong, and a shop near HHL. The wife and I usually go through the guy @ XTD.

I am in no way affiliated with any of the shops above.

See anmile's post above. The shop on Xinle Lu is M&J Jewellery. The proprietress's name is Josephine. She knows her stuff and has a range of second-hand swiss watches including some very high-end stuff (which is not on display).

She is genuine and so are the watches. As to prices - well, just make sure you do your research.

North side of Xinle Lu, upstairs in one of the set-back terraces with a front garden.

Thank You for yet another shop Tyler- I have yet to find this one.

My favorite just moved to the Pudong side of the river: Heng Shi
The owner is Chen Gua Qing 13901719262. he is in the financial district right
over the bridge near the pearl tower. On Saturday daughter Eva works, speaks English.
Exceptional selection of 1940s Rolex- I have bought many from him- all authentic.
Not at all unreasonable on price point. My highest of recommendations- Not something
I offer lightly. He is also well respected in the collectors circles.
In the basement of YuYuan are 5 or more sellers of really nice condition watches from
the 1930s and 1940s/ 265 Fang Bang Zhong (basement)
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
