Mobile phones are pretty easy, you can subscribe when you get here at China Telecom.....
Housing - often easier to rent to begin with and then buy when you've had time to find an area you like....is not expensive to rent - as for suburbs!!!!!! Wait till you get here and you'll see what there is in the way of suburbs....
Some rental complexes have a gym as part of the complex, but usually seem expensive for Shanghai.
Personal Income tax - when I came over here I sat down with an english speaking finacial advisor for that type of stuff....can become quite complicated depending on your nationality etc.
There are temples in the city on the Puxi side of the river mainly
Dunno about vege...I eat anything.

A tax table is in the FAQs.. but there are things you might want to talk to an real accountant about. You may want to think about taking part of your salary off shore.
Yes.. rent and take some time to look around for a good place when you get to know the city. Live on the same side of the river as you work. The upscale living areas are more in the city than in the suburbs ( unless you like golf villas)
Vegetarian.. there are veggie places.. try the restaurant at the Jade Buddha Temple,, pick up a english language entertainment mag and there are listing but they change. Very tough to get real vegetarian in a standard chinese restaurant.
Gyms.. you will have to check them out.. they are all over.
Buy a phone.. get a simm card.. prepay as much as you use. Its relatively cheap.. very cheap compared to the US. They have other plans also for international roaming. If you will using that feature.. get a triband phone. There is an article in the site on moblle phones.
