Shanghai's Best Burgers head-to-head

Postby Verbal Kint » Mon Oct 31, 2011 12:59 pm

This is it. It's all going to be decided this week. Who does the best burger in Shanghai? The two finalists are Piro and NY Style Steak & Burger. 1st leg of the big final is tonight, when SHEX's expert committee will visit Piro for the burger & Stella special. Come by after 7pm to see some true masters at work. There are still vacant slots in the judging panel for whoever feels they have devoured enough burgers to earn themselves the "expert" title.

I like the burgers at Hooters. This is not a fair contest for the best!

Also helps not to alert the venue that you are doing a food review, the kitchen should not be biased.

Also day of the week you go matters. It is not uncommon for the kitchen to be ran by assistants from monday - wed, with the actual chef to work on thurs-sat.

It was an arbitrary decision by the core judges, based on their experience eating at the various joints multiple times. These two venues also seem to be the top preferences in several discussions on here.

To Kief: If they have the assistant run the kitchen on their Burger special night, then too bad for them.

Hey if you join the panel you can motion to include Hooters in the contest

Myself, The Butler and Mr Nose. Also TIC has expressed an interest in joining the panel. Snuden used to be a member but he refuses to stay sober for the duration of the judging procedure (getting pissed on Stellas is allowed, or rather expected, afterwards)

There's one criterion for entering the panel: show up. We re just having fun.

Obviously we haven't tested every single place that makes burgers. Malone's and Blue Frog were considered and judged to be inferior to the two finalists. Still quite good though.

OK outclude me in. Piro is not far from my place, I've never been there, burgers and Stella sound too good to resist.

I'll try to get there around 7.15 and I'll look for a small group of Laowai degenerates. Or do all of Piro's clientele fit that description?

Just got home. Excellent burgers at Piro. I had the "South of Border", which has a Tex-Mex theme with guacamole, chilli and sour cream. Very nice indeed. All the ingredients were very fresh, the bun was crispy but soft on the inside, the pattie seemed good quality, tasty, not too fatty, if anything slightly on the dry side but not egregiously so.

Came with a serve of chips (aka fries) and an icy cold half-litre glass of Stella Artois from the tap.

New York Style have their work cut out.

I was again at Piro tonight, were you the guys sitting downstairs in the center in front of the larger TV? I had a quick glance but it was rather busy and so I just hopped upstairs with a pal.

I agree with your description Tyler and I also found the burgers slightly rarer than previous occasions, not that that is a bad thing, just an observation. Keep me updated with NY as I haven't found a better burger than Piro's in Shanghai yet.

Are the burgers Pirot sells at lunch different than those served in the evening?

Was there last week with the former F&B director of the American pavilion hoping to get great burgers.

But what we were served was anything but great. The top of the buns were burnt black, the burger was extra-well done (ordered medium) and absolutely flavorless.

I think it must be a lunch thing because during the day they turn into a Chinese restaurant serving kung pao chicken and stuff.

Yes, agree with the above comments. A very strong performance from the Piro kitchen.

I had the wild mushroom burger, good size burger, medium rare, the beef mince was of good quality.

Very much enjoyed it.

looking forward to the second leg.

I went for the black and blue burger tonight. Everything was good, especially the blue cheese that was very strong and tasty. I've never been to NY Style for the burger, but if they can beat the burger that I had tonight, I will be a happy man.

You should join the panel on Thursday, Opacity. It's gonna be a tough act to follow though.

Did you guys purposely order different burgers to get the full spectrum? Wise. Any issues with the cats roaming about?

I forgot to mention I got the mustard grilled patty burger, very savoury.

The cat only made one appearance, strolled casually past us and went out again. Then we had to get The Butler to get down from the table

You can order any burger (prices range from 55 to 85, but the 55 ones are quite rich already) and you get a pint of Stella for free. The next Stellas are 35 rmb on the list.
