why would you when chicken rice is tastier, healthier, cheaper and more readily available, right?

Of course - this is precisely why KFC's are so rarely found in any part of the world.

many things involved - advertising (big budget), people's love for fast food = unhealthy, convenience, comfort etc.. in case you cannot tell the difference why KFC is known.. :x

Well, basically I have the previlege of living in both cities on my own time and leisure, for sh it's always a love hate relationship. For Sg, always peaceful and calm. Seriously, both cities are not lacking in any sense, the choice of which city to pick depends on your priority list...

Singapore vs Shangai

Postby rogerwillson » Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:06 pm

If you want to live where all the action's at, I say put aside about 7000SGD. Cigarettes (Malboros) are 11SGD per pack, drinks at regular expat hangouts are about 30-40SGD per pop. Champagne at clubs are a couple of hundred. Buses in SH are 2RMB, buses in Singapore work on a scale, between 80 cents to 2.40SGD.

Then again, if you decided to work in sg, you could be offered a PR status by the state. Thats a rare opportunity to give up. Regrets?

Just a thought, the last time I checked, sg is rolling out the red carpet for foreign talents. How cool is that..? Massive tax breaks and incentives for corperations investments. Real estate has just recently shot up the roof..

I'm Singaporean, and working in Shanghai for the past 6 years. Let us say that, with a 20% reduction in salary here compared to Singapore, my family and I (4 mouths to feed) live better here in Shanghai. Perhaps it helps that I am fluent in both English and Chinese, and so can easily "go local".

Expats with children, I think the sg basic education system is superior and cheaper. You think?

Ah Beng,

As an educator myself, I can say that every educational system is different in its emphases, so we should be careful about terming our own system as being "superior". Cheaper perhaps, since the "local schools" back in Singapore will not charge foreigners an arm and a leg, unlike the international schools.

I remembered the kid of an American missionary who attended my school, back in Singapore. We remember him as the "average" kid, and quite "naughty" too. His results in the national examinations in Singapore was pretty ho-hum, and so it was quite a shock when he sent news to us, many years later, that he topped the state of Colorado in Math for his high school exams. When reporters interviewed him, he attributed his results to the discipline instilled in him, and the superior foundation in Math, when he was in Singapore (he sent us the clippings, what a boy!).

At the same time, I have at least 3 cases of schooling failure in my school here in Shanghai, with pupils who simply could not adapt to the increased rigour demanded of them in academics, and who needed an educational system that gives them more time to explore, and more time to think. They were very well adjusted back in their native educational systems, after leaving my school.

Interestingly, one of the "failures" had an elder brother who took a very sanguine view of the fact that Math and Science was so much tougher in my school (he was delighted when he finally scored 46% in a Math test). An interesting note from him after he left us revealed that he was the "top dog" in Math in his school, which also indicates that sometimes the kid and the educational system must fit each other.

So let us not talk about superiority. Each system has its merits, and its weaknesses. Bush may have salivated at how Singaporeans are experts at standardised tests, but I am sure there is a reason why his native educational system produces so many artists and entrepreneurs.

^My bad, you're right. Each system has its own merits. Good point.
