Volunteer F&Q
a. Can I apply if my English is not very good?
Yes. We have various volunteer positions available for different projects. Not everyone here has to be fluent in English. However, if you can communicate well in English or you are multi-lingual, it will make your work a lot easier in many situations. And we believe your English (and even Chinese!) will be greatly improved after our events, if you are not so good at either language.

b. How do I know if I’m going to be available for the project since I have no idea when the project is going to be?
We will send out e-newsletters to our volunteer database when there is a new project coming and we will state clearly WHEN, WHERE and HOW we need people to help. You can apply according to your strengths, personal schedule, and preference. We will confirm with you later on. On top of that, if you can not make it due to any reason, please inform us in advance so that we can arrange back-up manpower for your position.

c. What does ShanghaiExpat offer to volunteers?
If you want to make money, volunteer projects are definitely not for you. However, this would be a perfect platform for you to gain interesting and useful experience and even to network. We will also provide you with a great opportunity to show your talent and capability. Fancy restaurant coupons, free tickets to fun parties, and ShanghaiExpat souvenirs can be given out every now and then. We will offer outstanding volunteers an Excellent Volunteer Certificate and long-term volunteer assignments for more exciting ShanghaiExpat events. Outstanding volunteers will also be taken as priority candidates for paid part-time jobs, internships, or even full-time positions in ShanghaiExpat!

d. Can I bring my friends?
Absolutely! As long as you think your friend is suitable for the project, bring him or her in! Just notify us before the event.

e. Can I unsubscribe from the newsletter project updates?
Yes. Sending people information that they don’t want is the last thing we want to do. If you no longer want to get project updates from us, please drop us an email and we will delete your details from our database.

this is most certainly not what i was expecting when i read "volunteering program". sounds a lot more like an "unpaid internship", or really just "unpaid resume fodder".

Basically looking for free data entry, free content, etc. etc.

Usually volunteering is associated with a not for profit organization such as a charity, not doing free work for a for-profit company.

You could say internship if you want. There are people who want the experience of working here.. and for a few it did lead to a regular job. We are staffed right now for the budget the site brings in and not much more. We don't expect a lot of people to come out for this, but some of things to do are not that demanding, educational, and actually fun. Many things volunteers would do also tend to be not demanding on time ( 2 or 3 hours a week ) or a long term commitment. So, if something piques your interest.. check it out. If not, thats OK too.

I also clicked on this hoping for some charity work opportunities (I already have a job, don't need an internship, don't work in this industry) but would like to give something back to the local Shanghai community.
