Shanghaiexpat using Adware/Malware?

Postby edbreejen » Mon Jul 21, 2008 1:34 pm

Recently i get malware notifications when opening Shanghaiexpat. The following URL's come up as cookie, but recognised as (low level) threat:

ad.cn.doubleclick.net
ad.mediarevolver.com

Are you guys starting to use adware/malware?

The reason for that is this: one of the advertisers (HSBC) runs their ad through doubleclick. So you should only see that warning when you see the HSBC ad.

Also, since doubleclick leaves a third-party cookie (one not set by the site you are currently viewing - in this case shanghaiexpat.com), which is used to track users over a number of sites. This can be called a "Tracking Cookie", and some adware/malware detectors consider this a low-level threat, since they are getting information about what sites you're visiting.

You can prevent them from getting this information by changing your security settings in your browser. Add *.doubleclick.net and *.mediarevolver.com to your restricted sites list (done differently in each browser, so you'll have to read up for yourself)

Sure its nice that ShanghaiExpat makes ad money from these sorts of sites but I personally I prefer to install Firefox with AdBlockPlus to block these ads. then you won't have any warnings.
