Shared Apartment With a Dog-Help!

Postby BioChic1986 » Fri Feb 03, 2012 1:27 pm

Hi there! I gave in a few months ago and got myself a little, furry rascal named Daisy (from Shanghai Expat, no less!) and I still love her more than anything, but now I have had a bunch of problems with my apartment and need to move.
The problem is, I can't afford a newer building on my own, don't want an old building again, and none of the shared apartment people seem to want dogs. I would actually prefer a shared place so I have someone to interact with besides the dog, which is just sad. Does anyone either know of someone looking for a roommate who would be okay with dogs or is likewise trying to find a place and likes dogs( She is a smaller dog, still a puppy, actually)?
I am looking between Zhongshan Park and People's Square no more than 15 minutes walk from line 2, or a 10 minute walk from 1 station off (so like Changping Lu or Changshu Lu).
I'm a girl and relatively clean, but am ok with guy or girl roommates, as long as they are likewise relatively clean. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

not that i'm making a judgement in your situation but i really hope anyone who gets a dog, especially while in a foreign country, really thinks through the level of commitment and cost a dog will need. we have a small dog and just on the basics (food, grooming, supplies) we spend about 600RMB/mo. over, his lifetime, we would easily spend about US 20,000 on him for the basics, including acquisition, routine vet bills, transportation, etc. and only given that he is in good health. if he requires more veterinarian care, this can easily double. this is in addition to considerations of relocating him back to the US and finding a pet friendly rental in a large city (not easy compared w/china since it's either money talks or don't ask, don't tell here), the possible loss of thousands of RMB in apartment deposit for the scratches on the hardwood finish at our current apartment and other pet related costs. if you can't comfortable cover the costs (including potential vet bills for major but not uncommon issues) or your living or being in china situation isn't all that stable, you might want to think about getting a pet that's less demanding than a dog. this is from personal experience of having to deal with expats who make emotional decisions about dog ownership and then having to foist the vet bills and eventually animal on others.

again, don't take this personally as i don't know your situation and i hope you find a nice arrangement for you both!

I'm not even going to bother explaining why this is NOT a useful response.

lowlite can be easily read as......

You were looking for a room mate, not a lecture on how much it costs to keep a dog!!!

Ah. I could tell you were on someone's side, just not sure whose, lol. I'm pretty sure I already know how much a dog costs- I spend 800 per month on her ayi alone! I happen to be insane, but definitely not in need of a lecture.

Ha Ha. You are cool.
I have been doing rentals for about 7 years, but not rooms, or room sharing, so sorry cannot help.
Perhaps try posting in a different place. Perhaps room sharing.

I have had 2 Lawawa for about 5 years. (until my wife left, and took them).
GOD! I miss them.: (not her).
Actually, disagree with low...., as our doggies cost next to nothing for food, as dogs will eat your left overs, and they never needed any Vet attention, as very healthy, and kept putting on weight, which was the main problem.
He/She, neglected to mention the most important cost is licencing (registration).

John.

If you spay/neuter your dog, cost of licensing drops dramatically. Dogs are an expense, but not insurmountable, and in China, quite reasonable. Good luck on your apartment search. I'd recommend you also try craigslist and shanghai classifieds.
