Short term office space to avoid CNY noise

Postby gfunk » Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:52 pm

Hi, I'm looking for a space to rent for a month that might offer some respite from the CNY fireworks.

Last year I was located in an office in the center of a large building where it was surprisingly quiet.

I have project I need to work long hours on for the duration of the festivities.

Basement offices or converted bomb shelter spaces would be perfect. I'm not expecting a guarantee of utter silence. I don't need anything fancy, but I'm willing to pay, since this is short notice and short term.

Any leads or suggestions are welcome!

gfunk, I would go up HIGH for sure. Serviced apartments like Regus, Servecorp, Shanghai Centre and The Executive Centre are the ones to call. I recall being on the 50th flr a few years ago during CNY and bemoaned the fact I couldn't hear the fireworks.

Good luck!

A follow up in case anyone is looking for a similar solution.

I ended up renting a service apartment on the 35 floor (Rayfont Service apartments on Zhoujaibang). It allowed me to take my dog, and crash or shower when ever I needed it. I would recommend a higher floor and to not face any building of similar height within 100 meters (the echo from other buildings is the only thing to worry about at that height).

It's best to not tell estate agents that you are trying to escape the noise, as many will say it's impossible or not want to guarantee such a thing. Just ask for 35th floor or higher (remember floors with the number 4 frequently don't exist here, so adjust your calculations accordingly) and ask for a view not blocked by other buildings.

Make sure the windows are modern and double paned. And if you can find a place that doesn't have windows on both sides, where a bedroom backs on to another apartment, you'll get more peace in the back away from the windows.

I'm glad I stayed as it was amazing to see the city quickly disappear, block by block, in smoke from the fireworks...
